For some reason I can't warm to the #MaryWallopers. But they have done a heroic job in stripping away a century of sticky sugar off of Percy's songs.

#PercyFrench was aways a bit too tame for more defiant stars of the Irish folk revival such as #TheDubliners. He was a bit off-brand for the likes of #TommyMakem and #LiamClancy.But to me, Percy French still awaits the arrival of some loudly passionate and irreverent scruffs who can give his words some welly. #Shane and #Sinead would both have known what to do with this material, but it's too late to ask them why they didn't use it.

It was raucous and rowdy, and there is a hint of punk spirit to French.I see echoes of French in the great Scottish musician #HamishImlach, whose work in the 1960s and 1970s was similarly multilayered.
