  2. Bill Evans - Interplay

Jim Hall is featured so much on this great album that I'm surprised he's not considered the leader.

Anyway, great new mastering on OJC/Craft of this 1962 classic with Evans (piano), Hall (guitar), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Percy Heath (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Essential music, mastering, pressing, and if you've only got an old copy, worth the upgrade.

  3. Thad Jones - The Magnificent Thad Jones

Jones' Blue Note follow-up after Detroit - New York Junction ( mas.to/@dnanian/11080482305941 ), this release part of the Classic Vinyl Series.

This is an even better set than the last one, with great playing by Jones, Percy Heath (bass), Max Roach (drums), Barry Harris (piano), and Billy Mitchell (sax).

  4. Milt Jackson, Ballads & Blues, 1956 on Atlantic

Jackson’s most well know as the vibraphonist in the Modern Jazz Quartet but he also collaborated and recorded with many other bop musicians. Here he is joined by Lucky Thomson (sax), John Lewis (piano), Skeeter Best (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), Kenny Clarke (drums), Barney Kessel (guitar), Percy Heath (bass), Lawrence Marable (drums), and Barry Gailbraith (guitar). (Lewis and Clarke had […]

  5. Milt Jackson Quartet - The Nearness of You

This seems to be the UK version of the Prestige s/t LP from 1955.

Basically, it's the MJQ without John Lewis. Subbing for Lewis - Horace Silver. And subbing for blues-influenced jams, a series of standards.

  6. Miles Davis and Milt Jackson - Quintet / Sextet

Or should I say Miles Da Vis? (Sheesh, that some kerning.)

Hard to believe this came out *four weeks* after Blue Moods back in the mid-50s. Anyway, it’s a nice gathering of top players, including Jackie McLean (whom Davis had critical words about his drug use, but he seems to be in fine form).

  7. The Modern Jazz Quartet - Concert in Japan ‘66

This is a rare album, only issued in Japan, and only in mono (as it was recorded), 10 years after it was recorded. (Four tracks appear in the MJQ: 40 Years CD box set.)

It's *well* worth hunting down. Here's some info/background:

Fantastic performances all around (as you'd expect from MJQ), six weeks before Blues at Carnegie Hall.

  8. The Modern Jazz Quartet - The Last Concert

Spoiler alert: it wasn't the last concert. But they didn't get back together until 1981 after they broke up in 1974, and then continued until Bags' death in 1999.

They're playing like it's for the last time, recapping many of their classics with lots of energy and verve. Avery Fisher Hall is a great venue, too, and the recording is excellent.

    A must-have.

  9. Cannonball Adderly (with Bill Evans) - Know What I Mean?

    We do, Mr. Adderly...we do.

An MJQ/Evans Trio crossover event with Evans on piano (of course), Cannonball as leader on sax (of course) and…Connie Kay on drums with Percy Heath on bass.

Yes, this is as great as that sounds.

Recent OJC release, remastered, flat, silent...good stuff.

  10. The Heath Brothers - Paris 76

Percy Heath from the Modern Jazz Quartet formed this group after the MJQ played it's "last concert" a few years earlier. (Of course, the MJQ got back together.)

Anyway - this was recently released on SAM records in a limited edition of 3000 and it’s...great.

Fremer does a better job than I could (with a lot more space) discussing: trackingangle.com/music/the-he
