Only slightly late now:
The last part of my #pepperinacan challenge 2024. The photo was taken back in november, when I harvested the (two) peppers from my pepper in a can.
I was actually surprised, that the plant grew so well in the can and didn’t need anything, apart from water.
The yield, of course, was not comparable, to that of a 10 liter planter, which usually gives me 50-100 chili peppers.
Quite a fun project though.

we're basically at the end of the growing season and while my plant made "peppers" it is only in the barest minimum sense of the word
if I do this again I'll want to start a month earlier, protect the leaves better, and maybe fertilize if it looks stuck after a few months

Getting late in the season but I finally have a bloom... will there be a pepper yet???

My Bolivian Rainbow plant, which I’m growing out of a soda can as part of the #pepperinacanchallenge is developping very well.
It got to about 40 cm and just got it’s first flowers.
One of the first flowers dried out, probably because it didn’t get watered as regularily, while I was on holiday.

#PepperInACan check-in, anyone got flowers yet? Mine is still growing taller but August is almost here and there's not a bud in sight

Now, that it’s gotten a bit warmer, my #pepperinacan has spent a few weeks outside in the sun. The main plant has grown very well and a secound smaller one is thriving besides it.
The leaves are turning more and more violet, which is the standard colour for the bolivian rainbow chili plants.
I grow the plant in a soda can, because it’s part of the #pepperinacanchallenge

This guy is doing the best so far and pretty sure he’s a Serrano now. Unless habanero has similar lookin leaves. I planted both and forgot to mark the cans lol.

I think fedi should do the #pepperinacan #pepperinacanchallenge because its kinda silly that the main base of that is on facebook imo

My #PepperInACan update - just starting to get the second pair of leaves. Too many sprouts in here though, I need to transplant most to the garden instead!

Update on my pepper in a can for the #pepperinacan challenge:
Two weeks after transplantation to the can, one of the two bolivian rainbow chilis has not survived the process. I was already expecting that, because it did have almost no developed rootsystem.
The other one seems to have adapted well. While it has not grown by much, the leaves have doubled in size. Probably, because we haven’t had much sun in the last few days.

So, an interesting convo we just had about #PepperInACan
Something that is inevitable in any challenge like this is people will maybe not understand the rules, or miss something, or whatever. OR, maybe they want to try something interesting to them that doesn't quite fit the regulations. Obviously the appeal of a challenge like this is to experiment with gardening and do something weird and fun, it's not something that we should be taking deathly serious. It's about the fun of growing plants.
So, what we are proposing is that we have two categories. One will be a Strict Rules category, and one will be more of a Freestyle category. This serves two purposes:
If someone starts a plant and, say, accidentally breaks one of the rules as written, transplants a pepper they already started or uses the wrong sized can or whatever, it means that they still have the ability to participate with no harm done, without having any kind of advantage over folks that followed everything exactly. The last thing we want is for someone to get excited about growing a plant and then sneer and say "well ACTUALLY you did it wrong so you can't play with us!" It's supposed to be fun after all!
The second is if someone wants to experiment with something weirder that still follows the general spirit of the challenge, like if they want to play around with some fancy watering system they designed or have some interesting large can they want to use or maybe even some other small can-like container that doesn't quite fit the rules, they can still have fun and participate. The idea in this second category would be that you at least largely follow the original idea, you should still be growing a pepper in a small container, but with some flexibility. Ideally your entry would describe what you did differently along with the photo.
So, that's our thoughts thus far. As we said, our intent (especially since we broke the rules ourselves in a way by getting this started so late, I can't speak for @ruby but I didn't even know this existed in February lol) is for this year's fedi #PepperInACan challenge to be a trial run to work all the logistics out. Anyone interested in participating please chime in with thoughts about this as well!

Today I put holes into the bottom of a soda can, filled it with small rocks and gardening soil and planted two small "Bolivian Rainbow" chilies in it, that I had sown a few weeks ago.
As chance would have it, I just yesterday cleaned an empty #sriracha bottle which will make the perfectly fitting watering can for this project 😃

@lori I got two cans right now. I’m not sure if the one in the right would be okay for judging since it’s upside down but it is under 12oz and a pop top! The lip was too deep for my tiny can opener to pop the top off lol. I’m not sure what either of these are I think one is habanero and the other is Serrano!
I’m going to start more soon!

By the way this is my first year doing or even hearing about this so I have absolutely no tips for you! But here is my main can as of right now with some shishito seedlings living their best life. Let's hope they keep doing that! I have a few backup cans and I'm going to try caring for them each a little differently to see what works.

The specific rules are as follows (completely plagiarized from this page but with the Facebook specific bits omitted):
12 fl ounce (355ml) or smaller pop top beverage drinking cans (soda, beer, seltzer, etc.) can must be used. All other forms of “can” will not be eligible for the official judging. Examples excluded: candy or Spam tins, cans that must be opened with a can opener, cans that are screw top, plastic or glass containers.
Choose any type of pepper you wish. Sweet or Hot.
Choose any type of soil, peat based mix, coco coir, and fertilizers you wish.
No hydro plants, automated watering or drip irrigation. Hand watering only. Cans may be watered and fertilized from the bottom but no roots should be visible outside the can at any time.
Start as many cans as you wish. However, at contest end you will be asked to submit only ONE image of your best can for judging.
One or multiple seeds in a can. Your choice. All must be sown *in the can* on or after February 11th 2024 and remain in the can their entire lifetime.
Participants are encouraged to show images of their progress periodically.
Challenge ends September 30th, 2024.
On October 1st, the voting will occur in...whatever method we determine will be the best for a fedi wide vote by that point!

I talked with @ruby about doing this recently but I'm only now getting around to posting about this:
Fedi folks who are into #gardening #plants #peppers etc.! We are looking for folks to participate in a Fediverse-based Pepper in a Can challenge!
The Pepper in a Can challenge is simple: between February 11th and September 30th, you grow a pepper plant (your choice of pepper) in a 12oz (or smaller) drinking can, like a standard soda can. Starting October 1st, everyone shares their best can and everyone votes on their favorite (More detailed rules in a followup post).
The only problem with the original Pepper In A Can competition? It takes place via Facebook, which is something a lot of fedi folks are not particularly fond of! So, we thought it'd be fun to run a fedi-specific offshoot of this contest.
Because it is already mid May, we are thinking of this year as "Year 0". If you can start a pepper in a can now, go for it! If not, catch us next year! This will also serve as a trial run to figure out the best way to go about the voting. Because of the way federation happens on here, it may not be as straightforward as just "most likes in a thread" being the way to judge this (and frankly with the way Facebook works I'm not so sure about this method there either lol). So we'll get creative and come up with the best way to go about the voting sometime between now and October. This is the "let's figure out how to do this" year to hopefully set us up for a solid Year 1 next year.
The plan is to use the hashtag #PepperInACan for this, it's encouraged to post progress pictures as you go (and that's some of the most fun stuff anyway).

Pretty cool imo!
You use a can opener to take the top off of the can and I’ve been using my box cutter to cut drainage holes in the bottom.
