This article in Harper's about being a Jew in Auschwitz in 2024 is so important for non-Jews to read.
https://harpers.org/archive/2024/09/my-auschwitz-vacation-tanya-gold-tourism/
Please my non-Jewish friends who talk about the Holocaust, read it and spread it.
It speaks to how European "Jewish Heritage Sites" and "Holocaust Memorials" make a spectacle about Judaism, but they often rely on the same antisemitic tropes that Jews deal with today, how non-Jews are happy to talk about the Holocaust but don't want to deal with real Jews, and the reality of being an actual living Jew.
If you get even more curious about this phenomenon, please read "People Love Dead Jews" by Dara Horn.
It also speaks to the way Poland has worked so hard to rewrite its own history, to make itself both the victim and the saviors.

When I evaluate how someone feels about Jews, I don't put any weight on their support for Holocaust memorials.
I want to see how people act about living Jews, because it's well known that #PeopleLoveDeadJews

In the last three days, myself and Babka's incredible moderators have fielded hate speech reports about 90 accounts, across 53 instances.
As far as I can tell, none of them have been acted on by the remote instances. None.
Saying the Fediverse has an antisemitism problem is an extreme understatement. This network systemically hates Jews and treats us differently than other marginalized groups, even when we're the literal victims of terrorism.

Hey beloved and fellow Jewish people! If you don't want to mark #InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay, that is totally fine!! Remember it's more for the non-Jewish world than for us. It's THEIR responsibility, not ours.
You are not responsible for #PeopleLoveDeadJews.

I'm a 3G and one would think that I'd be focused on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
And of course the tragedy that killed so much of my family, and most of European Jewry is important.
But reading "People Love Dead Jews" opened my eyes. Like the author, I'm tired of Holocaust Education being treated as Antisemitism training. Antisemitism did not begin nor end with the Holocaust, and it's time to push for more.

There's a term for people who "feel awful about the Holocaust" but want to see Israel destroyed and turned back to "Palestine".
They're called "People Who Love Dead Jews"

Because we Jews are sick of being sacrificed as part of some point about humanity or society or politics or whatever.

CW: re: antisemitism, holocaust
This is my fear as well.
I'm glad that gentiles care about Holocaust memorials being vandalized, but I want to see more outrage when a Jews are attacked on the streets, or when anti-Jewish policies are put in place on university campuses.
This is why I use the hashtag #PeopleLoveDeadJews , because it's so incredibly apt :(

CW: re: antisemitism, holocaust
Yes, I agree.
I'm a bit surprised at the traction this post has gotten.
What makes me anxious is that while I see outrage about this, I also see the rise in antisemitism worldwide.
There is a book called #PeopleLoveDeadJews that makes me worried that people are more concerned about the memorial than the living Jews under threat :(

CW: re: antisemitism, holocaust
I find the response to this story surprising.
I used to post about incidents like this, or worse, somewhat often and get very little in terms of response.
My working thesis is that most of the incidents I'd report on were about, eg a Jewish shop being protested/vandalized, or a child being attacked in the street because they're Jewish- and it wouldn't get much attention.
But a Holocaust memorial being vandalized elicits outrage.
