  1. When wondering how best to describe the settlement of Thwaite in North Yorkshire, I went for 'hamlet', but then discovered it is described by some as a 'village'. So that got me thinking, what is the difference?
One helpful definition I came across describes a 'hamlet' as a tiny, rural settlement without a church or central services, typically smaller than a village which is likely to have a church, school and maybe shops.
A hamlet is more likely to be little more than a cluster of dwellings, but a 'village' will generally be more developed.
I think that puts Thwaite in the 'hamlet' category.
Situated near Muker in Swaledale, alongside Thwaite Beck, it was, from 1974, part of the district of Richmondshire, but since 2023 falls under the unitary North Yorkshire Council.
Popular with walkers, two long-distant paths run through it, the Pennine Way and Wainwright's Coast to Coast.

  6. An absolutely gob smacking video. I know some of the countryside this "race" goes across, and it's very very tough. Some beautiful scenes. #Montane #SpineRace #PennineWay #running

  7. Superb result for Jenny Yeo, first woman on the 2023 Montane Spine Race. She looked and sounded remarkably relaxed, despite having 268 miles under her belt and at least 3 seasons of weather! She had a very decent lead on the second placed woman, who in turn, has a large lead on the third!

    Huge congratulations Jenny! 🙌🏻

  8. To say he nailed it is an understatement! What a phenomenal run by Dave Phillips. Winner of the 2023 Summer Montane Spine Race. Looking chipper as anything despite 268 miles of ever changing conditions and challenging Pennine Way terrain. His nearest competitor is around half a day behind him. Outstanding running!

    Congrats Dave! Amazing achievement! 🙌🏻

  9. If anyone knows the Spine, it’s this one. Ever-bubbly Harriet Shields bosses her way through the #SpineChallengerNorth, making her the first to bag the full set of Challengers and full Spine events. She has completed the South, North & the full Montane Spine Races both in Summer and in Winter and says she found this one the hardest, based on the evening start and the heat.

    Kudos Harriet - you are awe-inspiring! 🙌🏻

  10. Absolute rockstar, Ellie Eccles has stormed her way through 160 miles of the #PennineWay to become the first woman and record holder in the inaugral #SpineChallengerNorth

Eloise Eccles, you smashed it! Huge congrats!

  11. I think this says everything about the temperate evening bathed in sunshine up here in Bellingham Liz isn’t taking any chances 😂

  12. 3rd & 4th men on the #SpineChallengerNorth went through CP2 in Alston earlier today. Jacob & Sion were still looking strong, focussed and were organised with their checkpoint admin. It goes without saying that everyone has been enjoying the #AlstonLasagne 😋

    #SpineRace #MontaneSpine #PennineWay

  13. Jovica, first man on the #SpineChallengerNorth looking strong in Alston… Lasagne in, bit of admin and back out just as second man Tom came in at a pace. Both looking and feeling happy despite a rather Cross Felly Cross Fell overnight! 💪🏻💪🏻

    #MontaneSpine #SpineRace #PennineWay

  14. The brilliant Mel Sykes, first woman on the #SpineChallengerSouth! Looking happy and unreasonably fresh!
Congrats Mel - incredible run! 🙌🏻👊🏻💪🏻

  15. Challenger South warriors!

The first three men, Jon Shield (centre), Nathan Drinkwater (left) & Martin Thompson (right). Excellent athletes with grit and determination by the bucket load. Top people to boot! Huge congrats guys! 👌🏻🙌🏻👊🏻

    #SpineChallengerSouth #MontaneSpine #PennineWay

  16. Absolute bosses! Rupert Allison and Hannah Rickman first man and first woman in the 2023 Spine Sprint. Both have smashed the course record out of the park! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Rupert’s confirmed time was 6 hours 59 minutes and 40 seconds.
    Hannah’s was 8 hours, 41 minutes and 38 seconds.

Hannah is having a few hours of sleep and then is volunteering in the checkpoint team! Not bad at all Hannah! 🙌🏻

  17. It’s time! #SpineRace #PennineWay #MontaneSpine
5 races ranging from 46 miles to 268 miles with 39,000 of ascent. And it’s hot 🥵

  18. The #Montane #SpineRace is a truly challenging 264 mile race up the #PennineWay. Winner finished 3 days ago and only one runner left on the course aiming to get to the line before 8am cut off. Really feel for the two racers who retired at the final checkpoint about 7 miles from the finish as they know they can't make it in time. So near and yet so far.. live.opentracking.co.uk/spiner

  19. Just outstanding. Damian Hall wins the 2023 Winter Montane Spine Race with Jack Scott in second place. Despite gales, blizzards and at times, thigh deep snow, both men smashed this run and both broke the men’s course record, previously held by John Kelly.

Amazing run by two amazing blokes! 🙌🏻💪🏻👌🏻

  20. Busy times and some gnarly weather overnight at the pointy end of the #SpineChallengerNorth
Tim Bradley is in the lead with Jovica Spajic in second, around 7 miles behind Tim. It’s been a beautiful Wintery day for both of them after a taxing time on Cross Fell. They’ve both had their Alston lasagne and are heading for dark, clear skies as they run along Hadrian’s Wall. We are ready and waiting for them in Bellingham at CP5

  21. A blinder of a run by Rory Harris, who won the 108 mile Spine Challenger South after some extremely testing conditions on the course, particularly over Pen y Ghent. He’s had strong winds, snow, very low visibility, sodden ground conditions, essentially everything you all sign up for on the #Spine events!

    Huge congrats Rory! 🙌🏻👏🏻💪🏻👌🏻

  22. The first three men in the #SpineSprint - Jon Shield in first with a new Sprint record, Hamish Waring in second and Andrew Morley in third. They’ve all run through 46 miles of incredibly windy #PennineWay with atrociously wet ground conditions, and they all look fresh as daisies!

    #MontaneSpine #UltraRunning #TrailRunning

  23. It’s almost Spine time…
As a reminder, there are 4 races, the longest of which is 268 miles with 39,000 feet of climb along the #PennineWay The athletes running the long race have 7 days. They run day and night from Derbyshire to Scotland and it is epic.

  24. I. Cannot. Wait. 🤩

If you don’t know this race, look out for it. You don’t have to be a runner to find it incredibly engaging. And if you know the Pennine Way, you are guaranteed to love it!

    268 miles
    39,000 feet of climb
    Derbyshire to Scotland

    One trail
    4 races
    A whole world of excitement.

  25. Who’s looking forward to seeing these two legends back on the Winter #SpineRace in January?

    Who watched them last Jan?

For anyone who doesn’t know it, the Spine Race is a bit of an addictive event. Athletes run from Edale in Derbyshire, across four hill ranges, to Scotland, along the Pennine Way. 268 miles and 39,000 feet of climb, with checkpoints every 40 or 50 miles only. It’s cold, dark, muddy, icy and snowy. It’s brutal!

  26. Good morning, fellow humans. 🌅

Here’s a recent picture of a distant #Yetholm that I took from atop Green Humbleton; an #IronAge #Hillfort with a double wall that sits in the #Halterburn valley. The #PennineWay passes the base of this small hill.

You can see the outer wall of the #fort in the foreground of this picture.

The hill opposite is #Staerough, which looms over Yetholm.
