  1. Such an atmospheric location – the delightfully-named ruins of 'Crackpot Hall' near Keld in Swaledale, North Yorkshire.
Imagine waking up in the morning to this impressive view looking down the valley towards the village of Muker.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was home to the Harker family sheep-farming family.
On a day like this the location seems idyllic, but well off the beaten track, it must have been a challenge getting by, especially once winter arrived.

  3. I'm intrigued that the Pennine Way is mapped on #OpenStreetMap as recognisable sections (mainly a reasonable hike for a day) until Middleton in Teesdale. Then there's just one relation for the remaining 190 km to Kirk Yetholm (just under half of the total route) : openstreetmap.org/relation/638

  4. When wondering how best to describe the settlement of Thwaite in North Yorkshire, I went for 'hamlet', but then discovered it is described by some as a 'village'. So that got me thinking, what is the difference?
One helpful definition I came across describes a 'hamlet' as a tiny, rural settlement without a church or central services, typically smaller than a village which is likely to have a church, school and maybe shops.
A hamlet is more likely to be little more than a cluster of dwellings, but a 'village' will generally be more developed.
I think that puts Thwaite in the 'hamlet' category.
Situated near Muker in Swaledale, alongside Thwaite Beck, it was, from 1974, part of the district of Richmondshire, but since 2023 falls under the unitary North Yorkshire Council.
Popular with walkers, two long-distant paths run through it, the Pennine Way and Wainwright's Coast to Coast.

  9. I spent the morning helping to repair a length of boardwalk across a boggy area on the Pennine Way below Cauldron Snout waterfall on the river Tees.

Most of the effort was spent getting materials down Cauldron Snout with the hazardous drops and huge boulders to negotiate. We were two volunteers and three staff from North Pennines National Landscape.

Here we are, getting ready to descend, passing timber and tools down the human chain we formed. #Volunteer #PennineWay

  11. Holwick Head House in Upper Teesdale, North East England.
Unlike so many of the other buildings throughout the landscape of Teesdale, this farmstead seems to have escaped having white-painted walls.
I was told a good few years ago that if you were a tenant farmer of Lord Barnard of Raby Castle, it was a stipulation that all the buildings on the Raby estate had to be regularly whitewashed!

  12. Yesterday on the Pennine Way, myself, another volunteer and Adam from North Pennines National Landscape repaired a stile, cleared a blocked culvert, rearranged a stone drain across the path and cut out some fabric from the path that was a trip hazard.

This is opposite the quarry above High Force. Didn't need 3 people but we were all needed to carry tools and materials as only way to this point is on foot from High Force Hotel. Hot and tiring.

  19. @hellenicsun @organicmaps @openstreetmap You should definitely checkout the @streetcomplete app then which makes contributing dead easy.

I've used it for a number of years and have just hiked the #pennineway using #osmand for navigation (but with map and compass as backup) and filled in loads of things using @streetcomplete whilst hiking.

  20. After 4 hours, the snow could be worse. There's a race going on along the pennine way, 2 or 3 miles down the dale from here, round Cauldron Snout and on to Alston.

Lots of daft bu.... I mean, dedicated outdoor sports enthusiasts, are doing the Montane sprint or something. All the way to Kirk Yetholm, started on Monday I think.

They have to check in at the youth hostel down there which I can sometimes see if it's not snow or mist. So I don't see it much. #PennineWay

  21. Random #ThrowbackThursday

Summer 1976, doing the #PennineWay with my pal Mike. First time either of us (teenagers then) had done a long distance walk, and that lack of experience showed at times. Staying in B&Bs or youth hostels, pre-booked so we were committed to a certain distance each day. No rest days or contingency allowed for.

The weather was dull and misty, until about half way through when it suddenly changed to the very hot sunny and dry that 1976 is remembered for.

  22. Absolutely devastated to see this ancient, iconic, beautiful tree has gone 😞 😢

  23. We've not enjoyed enough summer evenings this year - first, I was working lots of evenings, then it RAINED. But better than never.

We only had time for a short walk: 4 miles/6km up the Wessenden valley from #Marsden - the northern tip of the #peakdistrict . Out along the ridge, back along the #PennineWay.

First pic the way out, then the other one the on the way back as the sun started to set. Gorgeous evening.

  24. @bookstodon #amreading #readingthisweekend #bookstodon Reading my first Raynor Winn book, #Landlines. Maybe it's being away from home (I left the UK 20+ years ago) or maybe it is all the time I spent hiking on the moors with my late dad, but the #pennineway and #peakdistrict chapters are really affecting me (in a good way 😊). Especially parts like this (see photo) remind me of the good people of home and how accessible the peaks can be 😍 #hikingadventures #hikingformentalhealth #hikingforall

  29. Superb result for Jenny Yeo, first woman on the 2023 Montane Spine Race. She looked and sounded remarkably relaxed, despite having 268 miles under her belt and at least 3 seasons of weather! She had a very decent lead on the second placed woman, who in turn, has a large lead on the third!

    Huge congratulations Jenny! 🙌🏻

  30. To say he nailed it is an understatement! What a phenomenal run by Dave Phillips. Winner of the 2023 Summer Montane Spine Race. Looking chipper as anything despite 268 miles of ever changing conditions and challenging Pennine Way terrain. His nearest competitor is around half a day behind him. Outstanding running!

    Congrats Dave! Amazing achievement! 🙌🏻

  31. If anyone knows the Spine, it’s this one. Ever-bubbly Harriet Shields bosses her way through the #SpineChallengerNorth, making her the first to bag the full set of Challengers and full Spine events. She has completed the South, North & the full Montane Spine Races both in Summer and in Winter and says she found this one the hardest, based on the evening start and the heat.

    Kudos Harriet - you are awe-inspiring! 🙌🏻

  32. Absolute rockstar, Ellie Eccles has stormed her way through 160 miles of the #PennineWay to become the first woman and record holder in the inaugral #SpineChallengerNorth

Eloise Eccles, you smashed it! Huge congrats!
