Such an atmospheric location – the delightfully-named ruins of 'Crackpot Hall' near Keld in Swaledale, North Yorkshire.
Imagine waking up in the morning to this impressive view looking down the valley towards the village of Muker.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was home to the Harker family sheep-farming family.

Love this stretch of winding road that hugs every curve and contour as it heads across the North Pennines in Co Durham, NE England, from Blanchland to Stanhope.
At this time of the year, if the temperature drops, it can often quickly become snowbound.
As remote as it looks, the area once boasted numerous lead mines and a number of long-abandoned farmsteads nearby bear witness to some of the hardy folk who once managed to make this place their home.#england #pennines #durham #monochrome #landscape #photography

I think that Wolf Cleugh Farm, near Rookhope in Weardale, Co Durham, was abandoned in the 1960's (the fireplace looks late 1940's/early 1950's).
Even in its now in a very ruinous state, there is a haunting connection to those who once lived within these walls.
The former farmstead is also tied in with the area's lead mining past.
In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the property was occupied by the Roddam families, with George Roddam living here with his wife Annie, working as a shepherd and his sons working in the nearby lead mines.
The Roddam's would later move further down the valley to Daddry Shield and I have not as yet been able to find out who last occupied the property.
It certainly looks like quite a while since the last time a fire was lit and someone was cosily tucked up in bed in this room!#england #durham #pennines #abandonded #history #photography

A board-walk across part of 'Hannah's Meadow', in Baldersdale, Co Durham. Managed by the Durham Wildlife Trust, this upland hay meadow and grazing pasture is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The pasture was once owned and farmed by Hannah Hauxwell, who lived alone at Low Birk Hatt Farm without the luxury of electricity and running water. After featuring in a TV documentary about her harsh living conditions during the winter months, Hannah became something of a celebrity.

I drove the Woodhead Pass from Sheffield to Manchester last night. Dark, with pouring rain and dazzled by oncoming headlights, basically I was aiming for the dark bit of road between the oncoming lights and the white line on the left. My knuckles were white.

The UK Prime Minister has announced a major investment in the North's #transport system, marking the largest rail funding in decades. A little montage of Monday morning in the N Pennines. It's stopped snowing but the wind has got up even more and fine snow is drifting in off the fields. Max depth is about 200mm, half the depth expected.
I think the roads are passable but not going out today. I believe the A66 is still closed from Brough over the highest stretch.
Dug a path to the byre and that's far enough. I don't think it will melt quickly as temps expected to drop a lot over next few days. #Snow #Teesdale #Pennines

If they could get there, the skiers at Yad Moss, about 4 miles towards Alston from here, must have had an excellent day. Maybe it was 400mm up there.
My volunteer walling work day tomorrow in Weardale is cancelled and I have strong doubts about Tuesday. I'm told the snow at Nenthead was on BBC News, so I'll watch that later. #Snow #Pennines

Inside the byre today. In the far corner, the rabbits are in an enclosure, roofed by plastic and heated by a fan heater. Snow doesn't seem to get in there, they're perfectly fine and itching to get out into the snow.
The roof is made of thin stone slabs which don't fit perfectly. They keep rain and snow out if it falls vertically but a strong wind blows it up and under the stones.
So, we regularly have snow inside the byre because it's rarely not windy up here.

This view is from the north back, accessed via a private track on the Raby Estate with a small fee charged.
Alternative views (for free) can be obtained from the footpath on the south bank of the Tees, walking up from Bowlees at Low Force via the Wynch Bridge.
