The reader is introduced to #Elkanah of Ephraim: a man of two wives, Hannah and #Peninnah; Hannah was barren, but Penninah had children.
They would go up to prostrate before YHWH at #Shiloh. Elkanah went up and sacrificed; he gave Hannah a double portion because he loved her.
Peninnah would cause Hannah great pain regarding her barrenness, and so Hannah did not eat.
Elkanah was distressed, asking if he was not better to her than having ten sons.
