🐟 Mackerel crisis: not overfishing alone
New data challenges the mackerel story.
Weak recruitment over many years is the main cause of decline, says the Norwegian Pelagic Association (Pelagisk Forening) 🇳🇴.Historic stock estimates were also too low.

The new Thot album, "Delta", is out today! I sat down with band founder Grégoire to talk about it last week. We had a great chat, and besides the fact, Thot is now part of Pelagic Records and, of course, the new songs, we talked about Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and people needing to think about things they already know. Please enjoy the album and my interview (ENG & GER)! 🖤

Paleocene Fossil Illuminates Early Evolutionary History of Tropicbirds

"These #pelagic #birds are relics of a once much more widespread and diverse group of birds, whose #fossil record goes back into the earliest #Paleogene. The newly-identified species lived in what is now #NewZealand 62 million years ago."

The source of #paleozoic (hemi-) #pelagic calcareous #mud (before the rise modern pelagic calcifiers) has been bugging me, again, recently.
I have seen arguments for calcification of #cyanobacterial filaments, calcareous #dinoflagellates, breakdown of thin-walled fossils, and I'm not negating #abiotic sources.Does anyone have any thoughts on the topic?

And finally, four snaps from the third and last pelagic ( with Scilly Pelagics) on 3 August. It would be wrong not to dedicate this post to Wilson's Storm Petrel. My photos do not do the views we had justice.
