  1. Have a great weekend.

Short-beaked Common Dolphins from the Scilly Pelagic on Sunday.

  2. And finally, four snaps from the third and last pelagic ( with Scilly Pelagics) on 3 August. It would be wrong not to dedicate this post to Wilson's Storm Petrel. My photos do not do the views we had justice.

  5. I can’t believe I’ve left it until now. My first visit to the Isles of Scilly. Good trip over from Penzance with Cory’s (lifer) and Great Shearwater amongst many Manx Shearwater. SB Common dolphin leaping caused a few ‘ooohs’ 😃.

  7. Evolution of #DeepSea Anglerfish Illuminated today.ucsd.edu/story/evolution

Reduced evolutionary constraint accompanies ongoing radiation in deep-sea #anglerfishes nature.com/articles/s41559-024

"deep-sea #pelagic #anglerfishes evolved from a #benthic ancestor and quickly underwent rapid diversification... these results demonstrate that spectacular evolutionary radiations can unfold even within environments with few ecological resources and demanding physiological challenges."

  8. A look back at my 1st paper in 2021, when my 1st PhD chapter was out, on the role of body size and mesohabitats productivities in the linkage of #pelagic & #benthic systems, with David Boukal.

  10. The source of #paleozoic (hemi-) #pelagic calcareous #mud (before the rise modern pelagic calcifiers) has been bugging me, again, recently.
I have seen arguments for calcification of #cyanobacterial filaments, calcareous #dinoflagellates, breakdown of thin-walled fossils, and I'm not negating #abiotic sources.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the topic?

  11. The new Thot album, "Delta", is out today! I sat down with band founder Grégoire to talk about it last week. We had a great chat, and besides the fact, Thot is now part of Pelagic Records and, of course, the new songs, we talked about Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and people needing to think about things they already know. Please enjoy the album and my interview (ENG & GER)! 🖤

  12. Moving costs
    oceanbites.org/moving-costs/

#Pelagic zone is an evolutionary catalyst, but an ecological dead end, for North American minnows academic.oup.com/evolut/advanc

"Pelagic #minnows were more phenotypically similar to one another and evolved more slowly compared to benthic minnows, consistent with the idea that habitat complexity limits their ecological opportunities. On the other hand, pelagic minnows split into new species more often"

  13. Mediterranean marine #worm has developed eyes "as big as millstones" phys.org/news/2024-04-mediterr

    High-resolution vision in #pelagic #polychaetes cell.com/current-biology/fullt

"if our eyes were proportionally as big as the ones of this worm, we would need a big, sturdy wheelbarrow and brawny arms to lug around the extra 100kg... the worm's eyes weigh about 20x as much as the rest of the animal's head and seem grotesquely out of place... As if two giant, shiny red balloons have been strapped to its body."

"#neuston did indeed evolve from ancestors that were substrate-attached but not necessarily to the #seafloor. This means that the neustonic organisms may be derived from #benthic organisms and other organisms that aren’t benthic but still attach to a substrates in the #pelagic zone."

  16. Research reveals traits that make #fish prey tasty to tuna phys.org/news/2024-03-reveals-

The #Pelagic Species Trait Database, an open data resource to support trait-based ocean research: Miram Gleiber et al. nature.com/articles/s41597-023

"#ClimateChange is shifting where species can live, and the pace of change is most intense in the #ocean... Our big questions are where will marine species go, and what will it mean for communities that rely on the #fisheries they support?"

  17. Predatory #fish use rapid color changes to coordinate attacks phys.org/news/2024-02-predator

Rapid color change in a group-hunting #pelagic predator attacking schooling prey: Alicia Burns et al. cell.com/current-biology/abstr

"the attacking #marlin 'lit up' and became much brighter than its groupmates as it made its attack before rapidly returning to its 'non-bright' coloration after its attack ended"

"#Tomopterids are #pelagic #polycheates (segmented #worms) with paddle-like parapodia that propel them through the water column... They are voracious #predators, using their speed and agility to capture and consume a variety of midwater organisms... Tomopterids are one of a few organisms observed spewing yellow bioluminescent mucous"
