The federal govt launched the campaign as "Back to Sleep" in 1994 in partnership w/private orgs. Since then, it has helped save thousands of #babies from dying in their #sleep, says Dr. Rachel Moon, a #pediatrician & researcher at UVA who helped write the American Academy of #Pediatrics' guidelines on safe #infant sleep.
"At the very beginning of Back to Sleep, the number of #deaths decreased by 50%, which is huge," Moon says.

🩺 📘 Recent research led by Jessica Drescher at Stanford University Graduate School of Education found an association between access to pediatric health care and academic success in young children.
They looked at 12,297 school districts across the U.S., and found that nearly 30% of districts had no pediatric physician, incl 49% of rural districts. Districts that had more physicians per child had higher academic test scores in 3rd grade.

I am 100% certain no one noticed I missed uploading my blog post this week. And still further no one is wondering the reason why I didn't put up the post.
A 20 year old woman is suing the American Academy of Pediatrics #AAP and Dr. Rafferty, a leader of the team who wrote the 2018 position statement on gender affirming care. And also he was Ayala's #pediatrician.
So yeah... I felt like making a few updates to my post on what #accountability means for the AAP. 👀

I wish #doctors #websites would stop using those stupid #signature boxes where you need to use the mouse to sign your name. I’m #left-handed but I use a #right-handed #mouse (that’s how I was taught) and it’s a real pain in the ass to try to sign my name with the mouse. I just had to sign like that about 15 times for a #developmental #pediatrician. You’d think they’d know better. Just let me type in my damned name, for fuck sake. I have zero patience for this stuff. #autism #adhd

Very excited to read about the #healthbenefits from this #climatelegislation, and from a #pediatrician's perspective, this is a big #environmentaljustice #climatejustice win, especially for #childhealth in our communities.
However, much work remains to be done & more legislation needs to be passed - such as the #NYS Climate, Justice, and Jobs Package being supported by #NYRenews. Climate legislation is public health legislation.

#Healthcare + #insurance are #HumanRights. Full stop. One of the hardest things I see as a #pediatrician for #uninsured #children are the catastrophic health outcomes when a child becomes ill enough to admit to the hospital due to an entirely preventable condition. Equipment + medications should be accessible to all children, esp those w/complex medical needs. It’s infuriating that systems create this and heartbreaking to see the impact on kids. We must continue to build better systems. #equity

I came out of #retirement as a general #pediatrician 2 weeks ago on a part-time basis to help my former partners deal with the overwhelming influx of sick kids.
In my 30 years of practice I have never seen it so bad this early in the #respiratory season. Lots of #influenza, #RSV, #COVID being spread around.

One of the hardest things I see as a #pediatrician is food insecurity. Kids need food to grow. They also need housing, safety + health insurance. I take care of newly arrived #immigrant families in #NewOrleans. Often my patients lack several of these needs at once. We work year round for more equitable systems. Every Dec we provide food, hygiene items, toys, gift cards + more- this year for 125 families.
