  1. Just saw a post on another platform about the proposed #pedestrianisation of #London’s Oxford St and was blown away by the venom and cynicism.

It seems the combination of #sustainability, improved #AirQuality and #DisabledAccess are beyond the wit of humanity and the enemy of business.

How do European cities successfully manage pedestrianisation?

  2. also: good call re #pedestrianisation. If #Ikea ever wanted to do a flagship store in #Oxford, there is the Debenhams building still vacant ...

  3. Parisians back 'garden roads' project in record low turnout.

Residents of Paris have backed a project to pedestrianise and create green spaces on hundreds of roads in the French capital in a consultative vote.

Some two-thirds of those who voted in the poll backed the plan, dubbed the "garden roads" project, but only 4% of the Paris electorate turned out to cast their ballots.

  6. Anyone opposed to further pedestrianisation of Cork should look at Ljubljana 🇸🇮

So far 10 hectares of the city centre is car free with local approval ratings ranging from 88% - 95%.

The air is cleaner, the streets are greener and business is booming. It is also a joy to visit!

  7. From Oslo to Helsinki, the list of cities across Europe introducing car-free initiatives is lengthening.

Removing cars from city centres - or at least restricting their access - has been shown to transform urban areas into safe places for walking and cycling while significantly reducing air and noise pollution.

Does this have an economic cost or is it a win-win situation?

  8. In relation to the mantra of #pedestrianisation against #commerce and #retail
someone sent me this article on "Cities: The International Journal of Urban Policy and Planning" that proves otherwise.

Using a unique transaction dataset containing the estimates of sales volumes for stores across Spain and combine it with data from #OpenStreetMap they found that "pedestrianization increases retail stores' sales volumes."

  9. Finally - on the day it closes - filled out the #Fife Council survey about possible changes to South Street in #StAndrews. Survey didn’t work on my iThingies so did it on my laptop. In principle I’m in favour of #pedestrianisation but as a #disabled visitor I already find St Andrews hugely problematic for parking and getting around with two sticks or my #wheelchair. #PublicTransport is absolutely not an option for me. Nor is out of town parking. Anyway gave them feedback! storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/a
