  1. 24 hour clock time, and software librarians!

Since when exactly did 04:22PM ever rationally exist?

    It's 4.22pm, or 16:22 hrs, please.
At least ditch the leading zero if the old ways are too hard. Info tech should simplify, not complicate, communication.

  2. also: #pedants please don’t tell me samaritans are distinct from palestinians. i had that fight with my grade school teachers years ago. i insisted that both historically and ethnographically (i was a #pedantic kid) they were wrong, but their ethical point remains:

someone was in dire need, and you passed on by, doing nothing.

  3. @8r3n7 would you be happier if we called it 99% space? By that distance up, more than 99% of the air is gone. And in orbit, station and occupants have near-identical gravity, so >99% of that effect is gone. #Pedantic

  4. @amin

Oh, sorry, $30/mo for the first three months.

Of course, you being you, there's a chance you already knew that, and were being #pedantic. XD

  5. @angelwood
Please pardon my nitpick, but your third person cases aren't using pronouns at all.

US pennies are not out of circulation. They are just not being minted.

Yes, the (wrongly) so-called "Spanish Flu" was more or less exactly 100 years before 2019 but HIV/AIDS has killed far more people than COVID-19 (so far).

  8. YT Video: "Hall effect keyboards are getting too cheap" ME: "SHUT YOUR FACE" This argument/statement is forever shit regardless of the technology. Stop saying it. We don't live in a world where things becoming affordable hurts people; We live in one where things being unaffordable do! #Pedantic

  9. Public service announcement: When countering flat-earther nonsense, it's better to say the Earth is a globe, not just round. You can have a round disc too, which the Earth is not. You're welcome.

  10. @Photo55 You're right, but it probably won't surprise you that I try to vacuum the carpet and websearch the internet. As the unofficial motto of so many scientific trades goes: "you don't have to be autistic to work here, but it helps". 🤪

And yet I use eponymous words like "quisling" and "boycot" (and indeed I admire the Norwegians and the Irish for consigning those of whom they disapproved so enduringly to villainy), so I'm sure there will be commercially derived words that I use - just as you describe - but I am ignorant of their etymology.

Just to be clear, Robert Holmes didn't invent The Autons until 1969 and and we first saw them in Spearhead from Space in January 1970. :-)

Probably not, since according to Gell-Mann's own interpretation and pronunciation of Joyce's word, it actually refers to the sound of sea birds, so that would be rather confusing if ducks also quarked. (Especially if said sub-atomic ducks pronounced it correctly - i.e. rhyming with 'pork' and sounding similar to 'quart' (as in 'of beer')).

  13. @IanMoore3000 Jonathan was 1 at the time, this was his father, Richard, as the link confirms.

  14. @dbarros.
It's a bit disconcerting hearing, and seeing a caption about, the Motorola MC68000, while what is actually shown is a Thomson-CSF TS68000. I mean, sure, that was a licensed second-source, but would it have been that hard to use a photo of the actual Motorola part?
    Sigh.

  15. I really wish the person running this meeting would stop pronouncing the word "checkbox" as if it were "chexbox" (or checksbox?).

I'm not even going to speculate about how she pronounces "asterisk". (Actually, I'm pretty sure I know. Just like Goscinny and Uderzo's Gaul. 🙄)

Anyway, it's a small pet peeve, but it's still a peeve. So I'm peevish.

  21. Your unnecessary annual reminder that today's US Federal Holiday is, in fact, Washington's Birthday, not President's Day.

While various states have denoted today as Presidents' Day or President's Day, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act denotes today's holiday federally as Washington's Birthday.

So, if you have it off, enjoy. If you don't, have a good one.

  22. I think Secret Invasion’s writers mean “Heads of Government” here and not “Heads of State.” Otherwise it’s really weird if the UK Prime Minister is attending a European crisis summit with an assortment of largely ceremonial Presidents, Kings, Queens, and Grand Dukes.

  23. @jbz
But it *was* solved - doesn't that make it not the hardest problem?
Or does hardness refer to how long it took (357 years)?
In which case surely Trisecting an Angle was considerably harder as it took 1500 years.(?)
Also, that woman pronounces "Pythagorean" really weirdly.

  24. Editing a podcast interview I did with the amazing @triciakickssaas yesterday and I am super impressed!

Yes, I'm impressed with our conversation, and more about that when the episode comes out Monday.

But, the transcript correctly got "line to toe," where too many people would have tried to "tow" that line.

I now fully embrace our oncoming AI takeover!
