  1. Back in the #1970s I set up a #onemanband. #JesseFuller was my #inspiration and his Fotdilla. My equivalent were self generating bass #pedals. I upgraded over years. The ELKA SGP150 were the last set. They died around 2014.

I bought #Studiologic MP-113 MIDI pedals as a replacement with a Midiplus MiniEngine sound generator, but the combination never worked well so the band's been in abeyance since then. I always claim the band broke up due to #musical #differences

Last week I #discovered the #Behringer Pro VS Mini, a pocket sized #synthesiser. The one man band could be on the way to performing again.

  2. A composition of my Red Bass tinted towards Magenta, warmed up to 85F. I use JOYO pedals and various effects in my effect rack, in the signal chain.

  3. Bass Guitar unboxing

This is my elegant Bass guitar, built by Ibanez.

    • It was fabricated in Mexico
    • QC was Zero
    • the third string plays 3 to 6dB softer than the others
    • the soldering work is shoddy. I soldered much neater when I was a 8 year old boy
    • All the potentiometers came with dust pre installed, generating annoying scratching noise in my Analogue Signal chain.
    • None of the strings had the proper hight in mm. I have had to adjust those myself
    • The truss rod needed some adjustments also, since the neck was not under the correct angle
    • The strings rattled and rumbled on the frets when the Bass was engaged in producing it's notes
    • I need to take the time and measure the passive components in the Bass; luckily there aren't many because of the passive circuit nature
    • However I will most likely buy a set of high quality Bass Pickup Elements, because that's the easiest way to eliminate the status of the pickup elements
    • I will clean out the potential meter which are there already, but
    • I will still replace all three potentiometers with smoother feel, and the condensator for the tone control.
    • I shall also buy a higher quality Bass from Yamaha in the process, because Yamaha has always provided me with wonderful PA and Studio audio equipment.
    • A gorgeously sounding Sadowski Bass is also on my Radar
    • QC at Sadowski is good to great, according to info I read and vids watched

    Conclusion

    • After this absimal experience I understood why Sweetwater offers a wonderful new build {Bass} guitar setup, which I didn't consider, given the competitive price of this beautiful Bass
    • It is not nice to be expected to have the experience of a luthier in order to play a brand new Bass
    • Luthier skills are built over decades, you are a specialist in and out of itself
    • Bass musicians should not be expected to have those skills just to play a new instrument

I'm disappointed in Ibanez Mexico, but I will reconfigure my Bass so that it plays in a proper fashion

  20. My acoustic guitar, a gift from my wonderful mother, without many parts. The Bridge was glued on the varnish, which is the reason why it jumped at me, sweeped close to my face, before dropping on the strings.

I was lucky my face was spared

  21. A very informative video on the improvement of sound quality of (professional) audio equipment with capacitors.

This knowledge can also be used in improving the tone of my Bass Guitar which suffers from a 3-6dB loss of signal on the third string (D string)

  22. This post is probably only for the intersection of the #Venn diagram with circles labelled "#guitar player" and "#electronics hobbyist". I'm not on fora like #diystompboxes and such, so here it will have to be.

Like many others, I've built delay / echo #pedals / circuits using the ubiquitous #PT2399 digital delay IC. They're dirt cheap and simple to use. But the lowest delay period you can use them for is too long for some things, like #flanger / #phaser effects, or even some types of #chorus effects.

But I haven't seen much discussion of alternatives. I've been playing around with one I've built using the #M65831 digital #delay chip. It's not quite as cheap as the PT2399, but you don't have to look very hard to be able to get them for a couple of bucks (Canadian). But it seems to be so much better in this application.

First, it's designed and documented so that you can use a crystal to set its clock OR drive it directly with a CMOS-type square wave. No fiddling with drain currents and on-reset latchup problems.

Secondly, it sounds (to my ear) far better than the PT2399. The #datasheets I have for the PT2399 don't state a sampling rate; the M65831 uses 500 ksamples/s for lower delay times.

Thirdly, the range of delay available is larger. The shortest documented for PT2399 is ~31ms. For the M65831, it's 12.3ms using the default clock of 2 MHz. But the one sample I've tried is happy to run at 6 #MHz, for a delay of ~4ms. That's short enough for #flanging!

  27. This will be slightly #geeky, and probably only of interest to #electronics hobbyists and #guitar players. I happen to sit in the intersection of that particular #Venn diagram.

When I was a teenager, having only been playing guitar for a few years, I owned a guitar #effects pedal that went on to become legendary - the Boss HM-2 "Heavy Metal" #pedal. Its sound is still ubiquitous in metal.

I don't have it any more. I think I traded it for an analog chorus, which was a seriously expensive pedal back then. Although I have other #distortion effects, I've missed it a lot over the years.

Well, lots of hobbyists build their own effects. And the circuit schematics for many effects, particularly the classics, are available online. So like many others, I decided to build my own HM-2.

This image is the schematic for the #HM2. It's not the most complicated pedal, but it's a league above something like an Ibanez Tube Screamer. As far as active devices go, it's got 6 #opamps and 10 #transistors of various types, along with a bunch of diodes for multiple types and stages of clipping, and the usual jumble of capacitors and resistors. Oh, and four potentiometers.

  28. Whee - I have two #fuzz #pedals now!
Thankfully, they sound different - the Fuzz Face has more mids, and the Tone Box is more versatile with its tone knob and octave switch.
the FF cleans up with my 57/62 pickups #strat more obviously, both clean up at vol 7-8.
    I'm quite pleased.
