The annual Vélo Canada Bikes Pedal poll is happening again!
"Canadian communities are seeing a surge in micromobility, creating both opportunities and challenges for planners, governments, industry and users. To capture a snapshot of these diverse travel modes, we are launching a new micromobility count taking place over five days between June 2nd and 7th, 2026.”

Every year, Vélo Canada Bikes does a cycling (and more) count with volunteers across Canada. The results of the 2025 edition of their Pedal Poll have now been analyzed and published. Check out the details.

New preprint alert! We analyzed four years of #PedalPoll data (thank you, volunteers!) and guess what: high-quality bike infrastructure is correlated with higher rates of people biking. @velocanadabikes.bsky.social @meghanwinters.bsky.social @sflkirk.bsky.social papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Finished my shifts at Counter Point ID: 6554 in the 2025 #PedalPollSondoVelo. The first one (bottom in picture) is early and only an hour long because it was just a test of the app, since this is my first time.

@derekvanvliet Good morning, beautiful #PedalPoll volunteers. ;)

Yo #yegbike, it's #pedalpoll day, and I cheekily assigned myself to Clareview LRT Station East, away from the big bike thoroughfares downtown. I'll be counting from 4 to 6 pm. Inspired by https://social.coop/@Anibyl/114619750381195213, how many cyclists do you think I'll count there?

Vélo Canada's 2025 Pedal Poll is happening from June 3-8!
"The count is a chance to evaluate the state of cycling in our communities. Together we get a “snapshot” of what cycling looks like in communities across Canada, at the same time, year over year."
You can sign up to volunteer for a counting shift in your community. :bikelane:

The 2025 version of Vélo Canada Bike's Pedal Poll is happening Tuesday June 3 to Sunday June 8. If you'd like to volunteer to count people walk, cycling, or driving, they have a form where you can sign up. As they put it:
"It's is a chance to evaluate the state of cycling in our communities. Together we get a “snapshot” of what cycling looks like in communities across Canada, at the same time, year over year."

Vélo Canada Bikes has published the results of their 2024 cross-Canada Pedal Poll. I helped out by counting in Waterloo, Ontario. 😀🚴🏼♀️

Third reading of Bill 212 is happening now. I can't watch, it's making me feel too sad and helpless. So instead I'm working on the analysis for #PedalPoll 2024, real data lovingly collected by hundreds of volunteers.
(If you do want to watch, here's the link: https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/video)

There was a big increase in people using the trail in the second hour, with many more people cycling or walking/running.
-
Pedal Pollers use a mobile app for the count. As a couple of polling folks told me that they had accidentally lost data, I decided to break my shift into 2 parts. Here’s a screen from the app as I used it. It shows the count for my first hour. I guess it was a quiet afternoon — I had thought I might see more people.
-
I did my first Pedal Poll shift yesterday from 4pm–6pm (16:00–18:00). I chose a location on the Spur Line Trail in Kitchener. This multi-use trail runs parallel to an active railway spur line that serves industrial customers north of Waterloo. It’s a great trail — well-lit, asphalt surface, and maintained all year. And it’s major active transportation corridor between Waterloo and Kitchener.

Got my littlest helper out for #PedalPoll 2024! Mostly she slept on the job.
-
@sflkirk I start my first shift in 40 minutes. Happily, it’s a beautiful afternoon for it. And as I’m counting on a multi-use path It should mostly be people walking or cycling 😀
-
Enjoying my morning #PedalPoll shift in #Halifax this morning. It’s interesting how easy it is to almost miss a cyclist going by even when you are watching for them because they are quiet, small, and relatively fast. Never that risk with motor vehicles. And people walking are much slower so they are not missed either.
-
I don't want to brag but Ottawa is absolutely killing it in signups for #PedalPoll 2024. Both the highest number of signups and the most total slots of any community in Canada.

Here's something we love. Vélo Canada Bikes is running Pedal Poll/Sondo Vélo (Canada's national bicycle count) June 4 to 9, 2024. It’s a grassroots initiative to “evaluate the state of cycling in our communities. Together we get a ‘snapshot’ of what cycling looks like in communities across Canada, at the same time, year over year.”
It’s easy and fun to help out. Please check it out, and sign up to help in your community!
