The fires burn peat, which is a precious carbon sink. This means the fires release vast amounts of carbon.
The 2025 megafire in Scotland released 38,600 tonnes of carbon from burnt peat (the same as Mozambique's annual coal burning), which can require decades to centuries to recover.
