    "Among the most intriguing discoveries are bog bodies – astonishingly well-preserved human remains, many over 2,000 years old, bearing evidence of ritual sacrifice. Their presence provides a window into a distant and enigmatic past’

    Bog Story by Chad Alexander

    ‘Peatlands are also natural time capsules. Their waterlogged, oxygen-starved, and highly acidic environments preserve organic material in extraordinary detail, capturing traces of human history, mythology, and cultural memory. Growing at just one millimetre per year, each metre of peat stores a millennium of the past.'

    'Compounding these pressures is the encroachment of mineral extraction companies, whose pursuit of gold and other minerals produces irreversible scars on these ancient landscapes’

  11. Bog Story by Chad Alexander

    ‘Over 80% of Northern Ireland’s peatlands are either damaged or in poor condition, transforming them from vital carbon sinks into carbon emitters. This ecological unravelling threatens not only the climate, but also the richly diverse habitats they sustain, including those of endangered species.'

    #Scotland’s endangered #wildcats could be saved in massive 800 sq mile #Highland #rewilding plan

    The new Affric Highlands charity has set out ambitious plans to restore nature and wildlife over a sweeping area from #LochNess to the west coast.

    Dan Vevers Sunday Mail Chief Reporter
    08 May 2025

    "Scotland's #endangered wildcats could be saved as part of a massive 800-square-mile rewilding plan across the Highlands. The new Affric Highlands charity has set out ambitious plans to regenerate native #woodland, #peatland and #riverside habitats and boost endangered species like wildcats, covering a sweeping stretch of the country from Loch Ness to the west coast.

    "The group said it will work with local landowners to boost the local economy and make the region a hub for sustainable timber, fishing, farming, venison and wildlife tourism. Affric Highlands - whose emblem is a wildcat, also known as the '#HighlandTiger' - vowed to see the iconic animal flourish as it takes on the huge 30-year project."

  13. #Wildlife trust buys massive £17.5m #Highland estate

    March 3, 2025

    "A conservation charity has bought an 18,824-acre (7,618ha) Highland estate for £17.5m after receiving a large private donation.

    "Scottish Wildlife Trust (#SWT) plans to regenerate native woodland, restore #peatland and carry out nature-friendly farming on #InverbroomEstate.

    "The area of land near Ullapool, in the north west Highlands, is larger than the city of Dundee.

    "The donation that made the purchase possible was the largest in the trust's 60-year history."

  14. #Sundews' secret to survival: Study reveals how #CarnivorousPlants adapt to #microhabitat challenges phys.org/news/2025-01-sundews- paper: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wile

    "they alter the density of their leaf tentacles and the uptake of nitrogen from prey to thrive in different #microhabitats, such as mounds and hollows, within #peatland #ecosystems... #plants invest more in carnivorous traits, when nutrients from the #soil are limited and light availability is high"

  15. 🧵 2/2.
    Just above the Lecht ski centre, it was interesting to see an area of deliberately raising the water table to waterlog the peat, several different techniques are being used:

    1. Turf piled up on the downslope to create a pond.
    2. A series of small turf dams to slow the flow.
    3. Wooden boards used to create dams to slow the flow.

    And matting to protect the ground and retain vegetation.

  17. CW: Bucketlist

    On my #BucketList I don't have riches and fame or a world cruise.

    Instead I have:
    * rewetting a #PeatLand
    * planting a #TinyForest
    * planting a bamboo forest where a toxic landfill used to be ( #PhytoRemediation )

    I feel like I'm already rich, because I'm healthy, surrounded by still quite intact nature and currently have no existential crises.

    I'm already famous, because I have a few friends and am hosting a great community on my Fediverse instances.

    And I'm already on a world trip traveling by train to nearby demonstrations and activist camps every now and then, meeting all kinds of people.

  18. @euenvironment @EU_ENV the other day I met a German scientist who thought to stop draining all #farmland was a good idea to halt GHG emissions from #peatland. However he could not distinguish #Moor and #Marsch. I was not sure whether we build up peat on every soggy spot we stop draining. #drainage #agriculture

  19. @AeonMach @jbenjamint I’d agree with you about not pinning our hopes on #hydrogen. But I used to live in the Gt Glen and saw the scale of environmental damage done by early pumped storage schemes - #LochNess/#LochMhor at #Foyers. But not only the early ones! The #GlenDoe scheme above #FtAugustus flooded a massive basin of #peatland supporting. good breeding populations of rare waders …dunlin, golden plover & greenshank… in the #Monadhliath

    #pumpedStorage not the answer.
