Across Syria, farmers and rural communities have long sustained land, seeds, and knowledge amid violence, dispossession, and ecological stress. Agroecological practices did not begin after the fall of the Assad regime; they have endured through local networks, everyday resistance, and deep care for land and livelihoods.

Today, a new political moment is opening space for farmers to gather, connect, learn, and speak openly about reclaiming people-centred agricultural futures. As Syria confronts war’s aftermath, displacement and return, and accelerating climate breakdown, this online event brings together perspectives rooted in lived experience and grassroots practice. It asks urgent questions about who controls land and food systems, whose knowledge counts, and how food sovereignty can underpin social justice and collective survival.

Ansar Jasim is a food sovereignty activist and Lara is a photographer and food sovereignty activist from Suwaida.

Tech-solutions like high-rise, soil-less greenhouses are expensive (although VC funds and governmental subsidies may give the impression that there is potential) and completely miss the issues of the food systems (resource and energy intensity, social and labor aspects, corporations as drivers of the unsustainability of the food system, the potential of appropriately managed agroecosystems to host biodiversity, biogeochemical nutrient cycling and carbon storage ...).

I had a professor at university that was fully engaged un hightech highrise farming.
He wasn't at all pleased when his students pointed out that his pet technology would be horribly fragile, depending on global logistic chains, electricity and inputs (fertilizers, and a lot of pesticides, since the system needs to be kept near-sterile).
Skyfarming has a low resilience in chaotic situations. Please let us not make our food production be even more dependent on a well-functioning modern society, especially when facing *this* future.

We need productive and sustainable smallholder systems. The solutions are out there and many people are working towards the transition to #agroecology.

(Not meant as an attack towards you, @maarteuh, I just want to argue against such tech-solutions in agriculture, because due to our current culture, "promising" technocratic solutions need to be viewed very critically)

CW: What is agroecology?

Agroecology is a social movement originated by peasant farmers in the global south but nowadays spread over the whole world.

One of the main organizations is @ViaCampesina .

And agroecology is a field of research where scientists combine the most advanced interdisciplinary knowledge of agricultural ecosystems (I am a soil microbiologist and work with botanists, entomologists (insects), agronomists, food chemists, but also sociologists and economists) with the applied understanding of farmers and indigenous people to develop and promote sustainable farming techniques and a transformation of the food system.

This is because from a scientific point of view, the industrial food system has way too many disadvantages, destroying the planet, society and our health.
