After the nearly 1" of rain we had the other day, the fruit trees needed a fresh coat of kaolin.

Peach trees got a haircut & a thinning of the fruiting branches yesterday.
While I do some pruning in the dormant stage in late February or early March, heavy pruning then triggers the trees to put out a ton of new growth. Which is not optimal if you are trying to keep the trees small. I follow the guidelines from the book "Grow a Little Fruit Tree" & prune midsummer.
After the scare we got early spring with the freeze, we were worried that the flower buds had died, but we lucked out..the trees were full of flowers & then those flowers became fruitlets.
The fruitlets are about 1 1/2" in diameter. To keep the tree healthy as well as to encourage large peaches, it's important to cull most of the fruit. Ideally, the remaining peaches should be 4- 6" apart.
I got through most of the 3 trees. Next up: the 2 plum trees.
The first years I did this, i just about cried culling all that potential fruit. Now I'm Ming The Merciless.

All it took was six years of care-taking, lessons learned, and more than a little luck (or possibly divine favor), but this year I have peaches! Or maybe the peach trees are saying, "Hey, this year has been rough - here's something sweet to help you through for a bit." Either way, I'm grateful.

My 7 year old peach trees (6 years in the ground here) look like they might just provide fruit this year. In the meantime, I'm taking this as a sign that they are happy and healthy and maybe I've hit my stride in caring for them. They sure are pretty though. :peach_ms:
