Privileged insulation versus “peaceful ‘good trouble'”
The fear percolating throughout the United States is palpable and as a result, a number citizens have considered, or in some cases, have acted upon changing their residency over the past six months or so. That being said, many, many others have chosen “peaceful good trouble” such as protests, letter-writing campaigns, phone calls, sit-ins, boycotts, letters to the editor, and other similar efforts as a way to restore the hopes and dreams of the nation we have always aspired to be.
Source: rd.comThose who have the wherewithal to leave the United States should bear in mind that most Americans do not have the option to insulate themselves from the ongoing discord by simply relocating elsewhere. Furthermore, the decision to leave the country (whether temporary or permanent) will likely make the task of reversing the current political course that much harder.
Why? Multiple reasons:
- Each person who leaves reduces the number of potential voices speaking out against those policies that harm the disadvantaged, minorities, and the unprivileged, as well as many everyday Americans.
- Every person who leaves is one less potential vote that could have been cast in opposition to the efforts of those who are reversing decades of rights and liberties achieved by those who have long been underrepresented. This could prove critical in purple states where margins of victory are often razor thin.
- Without those who have left, consumer boycotts are likely to have less participants, causing them to take longer to be felt by the targeted organizations.
- Each person who leaves could result in one less protestor on our streets decrying the adverse policies being imposed by the current administration.
- Those with monetary wealth who decide to leave could reduce the potential funding for actions and campaigns designed to challenge and overcome unacceptable policies, including those perpetuated by oligarchs.
- Reaching out from across the pond or from the other side of an international border will likely have minimal effect or influence on decision-makers, as it will likely be seen as coming from those who gave up their stake in the process.
To be clear, nobody is saying that those who are truly in danger should stay in the United States and unduly risk themselves and their loved ones. However, given that a large proportion of those who decide to decamp from American tend to be of financial, racial, and/or social privilege, they are less likely to be the ones most directly impacted by the actions arising out of Washington, D.C…at least at this time.
In the end, one’s place of residency is a personal decision. However, if America is to strive for the true “greater good,” enshrined by the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, then it must be done loudly, boldly, and in unison, with voices raised from each and every distant corner of this vast landscape we all know and love.
