  1. Waking up to a drizzle of rain this morning really was a treat. 😍

  2. It’s an unseasonably sunny, pleasant spring day here in Portland. While I was getting mail from the box a school bus stopped to drop off a handful of older children (a young tween?). One of them ran past me then leapt into the air, literally clicking the heels of their trainers together whilst making an inarticulate sound of freedom and joy.

I wished them a very happy Friday.

  3. If it's hailing mid-April, I get to have hot chocolate with my lunch

  4. And suddenly all the lawnmowers in the neighborhood turn off #pdxtst

  5. Some good thunderstorms ⛈️ tonight here in Hillsboro.

  6. Hail in Hillsboro! Started light, hard then some wind.

  7. I love how the weather forecast for #Portland predicted rain for the entire week but every day is turning out to be sunny and beautiful.

And by love, I mean that I'm trying to plan my schedule and do not appreciate every single day being a mystery.

  8. Cali is basking in all the rain and snow that was forecast for this morning.

  9. It was nice and sunny in California but my moleman eyes are glad to be back in cloudy Oregon #pdx #pdxtst

  10. RE: mstdn.ca/@ingalls/116126369357

Hah! I am nearly positive I felt this this morning. I even went online to check if earthquakes were being reported. But I was too early, or checking the wrong sites.

My first thought was, “that can’t be someone doing laundry at 5am”.

It was super light, a lot like a half second of the washer on spin.

  12. If you have not watched the "War Game" documentary, now is definitely the time.

"The President’s authority to deploy the U.S. military on domestic soil is explored in this genre defying film about a role-play exercise involving former elected officials and senior military officers, highlighting the risks of unrestrained executive power"

  13. We’ve reached the time when the summer heat outweighs any desire for design & aesthetic. Portland is having a second 90F/32C day so I’ve deployed my janky looking, but very effective hack to block the only west-facing window in our home.

This window is one of those window boxes, so it not even remotely insulated, double-paned, or anything that would improve its efficiency. In the winter cold pours in from this space and in the summer this unshaded window belches temperatures above 105F/40C into the kitchen. On the positive side, our cat loves this space, he lounges on some carpet we put in the bottom and yells at birds.

If you’re struggling with rising temperatures and have access to a a place that sells construction materials, you might consider buying some of these R-Tech insulation panels to block windows. These are coated with Mylar on the side I’m facing out, towards the sun. It’s impressive how well they work!

I’ve been thinking I’ll order some insulated curtains for this space, but my wife has wondered if this fix is actually more effective! We might still hang some, but I’ll keep these two panels around for extremes.

  21. Disappointed, but not surprised, that the “heavy snow” my phone insists is falling is actually freezing rain. Even though it left me feeling pretty depleted, I’m glad I persevered with shoveling and spreading de-icing salts on the front porch and paths to the vehicles, trash/recycling bins, and mailbox (not that I expect any mail delivery). We made sure our YakTrax are by the front door.

I’m grateful I made the effort to get groceries and supplies for our animal companions yesterday because Portland will be shut down Friday. I got a call from the City advising that only essential employees are to report tomorrow.

I’m not sure the roads will be passable until Sunday. We’re not on the primary snow plow route and are at 500’ elevation. When an ice storm comes we’re not going anywhere until the thaw.

  23. We have a break in the snow and the wind has settled to fierce gusts instead of the sustained gale. I think we have at least 2-3 inches of snow. More expected later.

I’ve been grateful for a steady stream of emails from local businesses closing. I appreciate businesses taking care for the safety of employees. It makes it safer for everyone if customers aren’t taking a chance because they think they have to have that bakery order for Valentine’s Day (I personally had an order to pickup at noon tomorrow and maybe that will happen Sunday instead).

  43. We’re beginning a stretch of HOT weather so it’s time for this fix I didn’t think of until last year! We have a single, west-facing window, it’s a greenhouse box window. In the summer it absolutely bakes our kitchen. In the winter cold pours in from it.

Solution: 2 insulating foam panels. The side facing out the window is coated in Mylar, so it even reflects sun away! While it looks janky, we found it helped a lot.

Ursa hates it because he has a mat in this window box and likes to lie there, chattering at birds.

  47. Still no power. Really grateful it’s not 18F like it was last weekend. 37F is still damn cold, but it could be worse. We also still have hot water since the water heater is natural gas! Everyone is finding ways to keep warm.

We been excited to see big trucks from arborists or power company pass our house, but they’ve not yet stopped to the particular tree fiasco in our front yard. Then we remembered that no one can drive up the main road through the larger neighborhood, all traffic has to loop through our neighborhood because of the trees.
