  1. Waking up to a drizzle of rain this morning really was a treat. 😍

  2. White truffle season in Oregon is awesome. Infusing some eggs and cheese from truffles we found yesterday #truffles #pdxtst #fungi .

  3. We’ve reached the time when the summer heat outweighs any desire for design & aesthetic. Portland is having a second 90F/32C day so I’ve deployed my janky looking, but very effective hack to block the only west-facing window in our home.

This window is one of those window boxes, so it not even remotely insulated, double-paned, or anything that would improve its efficiency. In the winter cold pours in from this space and in the summer this unshaded window belches temperatures above 105F/40C into the kitchen. On the positive side, our cat loves this space, he lounges on some carpet we put in the bottom and yells at birds.

If you’re struggling with rising temperatures and have access to a a place that sells construction materials, you might consider buying some of these R-Tech insulation panels to block windows. These are coated with Mylar on the side I’m facing out, towards the sun. It’s impressive how well they work!

I’ve been thinking I’ll order some insulated curtains for this space, but my wife has wondered if this fix is actually more effective! We might still hang some, but I’ll keep these two panels around for extremes.

  8. #Hailstorm in Portland following a massive clap of thunder. Thunderstorms in Portland used to be a rare thing. But then so did days above 90°F

  9. ❄️ Hey, Portland - it's time to vote for your favorite snow plow names! ❄️

"News Blog: Cast your vote to name five PBOT snowplows"

    portland.gov/transportation/ne

"The submissions are in, 20 names have been chosen, and now the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) calls on the public to help choose the top five snowplow names."

"Use this as an opportunity to practice your ranked choice voting skills! " 😂

  10. Running out to #Hillsboro today on a pharmacy errand. It’s reached “convection oven” level out here with a west wind blowing hot air right down TV Highway! #pdxtst #Oregon #heatwave2024

  11. The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool (app) was recommended on the emergency call. It’s a good addition to my collection of weather related apps!

  12. We’re beginning a stretch of HOT weather so it’s time for this fix I didn’t think of until last year! We have a single, west-facing window, it’s a greenhouse box window. In the summer it absolutely bakes our kitchen. In the winter cold pours in from it.

Solution: 2 insulating foam panels. The side facing out the window is coated in Mylar, so it even reflects sun away! While it looks janky, we found it helped a lot.

Ursa hates it because he has a mat in this window box and likes to lie there, chattering at birds.

  13. Yesterday I took down the insulation panels from the window box in the kitchen so of course it’s snowing! #pdxtst #FarSW #Ashcreek

  14. We have power once more! I opened the east window and yelled thanks to the crew still working on things. It’s not back for our neighbors just north of us, but a neighbor to the east side confirmed they have power as well.

  15. Still no power. Really grateful it’s not 18F like it was last weekend. 37F is still damn cold, but it could be worse. We also still have hot water since the water heater is natural gas! Everyone is finding ways to keep warm.

We been excited to see big trucks from arborists or power company pass our house, but they’ve not yet stopped to the particular tree fiasco in our front yard. Then we remembered that no one can drive up the main road through the larger neighborhood, all traffic has to loop through our neighborhood because of the trees.

  16. Power is still out. I sent the yoga class cancellation message I queued up yesterday, just in case. Ursa has burrowed between blanket layers on the bed after his breakfast.

  17. I'm having trouble capturing the extent to which every single branch and item outside is currently encapsulated in a layer of ice.

  18. The tree I’ve worried about all week has come down onto the transformer on a pole in our front yard. The transformer blew out, igniting both it and the tree. Embers are blowing down the street, occasionally into our house.

    Do not like. No stars.

  19. Made out to knee PT. Returned home to ice forming rapidly on branches and our power out. Because it’s been raining sideways since the wee hours the screen in our one east-facing window is nearly solid ice.

  20. The #IceStorm and #FrozenRain in #Portland is pretty crazy right now, but I do not understand all the people saying it is unprecedented in scope or damage.

The storm in February 2021 had about twice the amount of ice sticking to trees and power lines, bringing them down all over the place.

    #pdxtst

  21. While our steps are cleared of ice the slope of the driveway could be used by a bobsled team. In theory the trash will be collected in the morning so I made like a hockey player, checked the bins with my “less bad” shoulder to free them from the ice, and dragged them to the curb.

I’m grateful for the YakTrax gifted to me a few years ago by @akf. They keep me upright on the ice every winter!

  22. This is the view of our living room from outside, through the #FrozenRain on the window. There are two dogs in this photo somewhere.

    #portland #pdxtst

  23. Wow the frosted glass effect on our windows right now from the #FrozenRain is really something.

    #portland #pdxtst

  24. Contrary to weather app opinion that the storm would arrive with heavy snow, the “Tk, tk, tk.” on the windows announces that the ice storm has landed. Both cars are already encased in a thin layer of ice.

I got more de-icer salt down on our front steps, out to the cars, and the path to the bins for trash, compost, and recycling. Hopefully I’ll be able to break through the ice & snow combination since there’s salt out now.

  25. Our power came back on around bedtime. Hopefully we stay up. Comcast has been down since Saturday. There’s a cable down on the road. We luckily changed to fiber at the beginning of the year, we may be the only people in the neighborhood who have internet access.

Ice storm inbound in 40 minutes. We are well supplied and have batteries charged. I’m going to turn on the electric blanket to keep the bed warm, just in case we lose power.

    #pdxtst #PDX #FarSW #AshcreekNeighborhood #TheIceStormCometh #BattenDownTheHatches

  26. Power is out again, right as we were trying to get dinner started. It’s not affecting a friend who lives close by, could be related to the other half of our neighborhood that’s been without since Saturday.

There’s folks with work lights set up in our front yard and someone on a pole. Hoping this might indicate we won’t be out for long. So tempting to go ask them what’s up!

    #PDX #FarSW #AshcreekNeighborhood #pdxtst

  27. Our power is back (for the moment). Wind is gusting up to 44MPH and instead of snow we’ve got ice pellets.

Two large trees are down, blocking the main road serving our neighborhood. The stand of trees is now precarious AF, could take it several lines if another tree falls. I’ve called it in to the bureau of transportation and they’ve dispatched an emergency arborist.

For now power lines are ok, but the trees in the small stand at the left of the picture are now shallowly rooted in soil that’s already seen one tree uprooted.

  28. I think we’re getting a mix of snow and ice.

Folks who laugh at #Portland completely losing all coherence during a winter storm event fail to understand that it is rarely _just snow_. We get snow, ice, and often a little warmth to turn it to inches of solid ice. If it were snow alone it wouldn’t be as bad.

We also don’t have a large fleet of plows because it wouldn’t be financially sustainable to maintain vehicles that maybe will get used for one event a year. Combine that with a very hilly metro area and tons of trees and you get a #Snowpocolypse.

I grew up here and every once in a while a serious winter storm shut everything down for days on end. I can recall one winter as a kid where we were without power for over a week. It was wretched.

  29. Incoming #smoke over #Portland from fires in the Central Oregon Cascades and Southern Oregon/Northern California.

  30. A magnificent #smoke plume is coming off the #PetesLakeFire southwest of the Three Sisters in the Oregon Cascades. It and smoke from fires between Medford and Crescent City are drifting north and will likely be noticeable in #Portland but should stay well above the surface.

  32. 10:30 Saturday - The #CampCreekFire in Bull Run is now 11% contained and remains under 1000 ha burned.

  33. 🟡🌫️ #AirQuality alert for #Portland until 12:00 Friday due to #smoke drifting down from the #CampCreekFire in Bill Run with light wind conditions. Consider air quality when planning outdoor activities, especially if you are more sensitive to air pollution.

  34. Lots of aircraft working the #CampCreekFire this evening. I see airplanes dropping scooping water out of the Columbia in the waterfall corridor, planes dropping retardant, and helicopters scooping out of the Bill Run reservoir on FlightRadar24.
