  1. Interestingly while flicking through my dad's copy of #PCPro one columnest referred to #AI as a cancer on computing and another shuddered at the idea of asking ChatGPT something instead of Googling for it. Is it just me or does it feel like the tide is turning on the overselling of slopware?

  11. Visiting my family, I found the CDROM of the first #Linux I ever installed, it was #Suse Linux 5.2 free on the cover of #PCPro. With a little help from #PCem I got it going again, 22 years later, it's still pretty usable :-o #fvwm2 #Netscape #xf86confighell

  16. OK, so I've been here 10 days now and I'm sticking around, so guess I had better do the #mastodon #introduction thing.

I'm an old #hacker and #journalist who has been writing about #infosec and stuff since what feels like forever. Indeed, I won a 'Technology Journalist of the Year' award back in 1996 for an article called 'Threats to the Internet.' Heh.

I'm a Senior Contributor at #Forbes (don't hate on me) and have been a Contributing Editor of the UK #tech #magazine #PCPro since the very first issue in 1994.

I used to write #books but the novelty* wore off after 20+ being published over the years. I'd like to say that being an #author feeds my wanting to somehow live forever, but most of my books have long since been pulped I imagine.

*Too much hard work, too little monetary reward.

I'm not all about #writing and doing techy stuff, although my #geek handle is well deserved. In my downtime I like to kick back and listen to #music (rock, goth, folk, punk) or get lost #gaming.

I'm here for #learning, #sharing, and #fun. Loving the chilled vibe and will do my best not to spoil things 😉
