PCMCIA driver: CFD 1.41

CFD ("CompactFlashDevice") supports using CompactFlash memory cards on the PCMCIA-Port of an A600 or A1200. Jaroslav Pulchart has created a fork of Torsten Jager’s original driver and released driver version 1.41 two weeks ago.

This release focuses on stability and CPU compatibility improvements across both CPU tiers (68000/68010 and 68020+).

Frankly, I miss PCMCIA, and ZIP drives. Computing that required putting chunky cards and cassettes and stuff into drives. Old 90s anime style computing.

One for the #RetroComputing folks who know their way around #PCMCIA and #PCCard: See the different keying mechanisms here? The top one fits my vintage #IBM laptop, the lower one doesn't.

The original standard was defined for both 5 volt and 3.3 volt cards. The 3.3 V cards have a key on the side to protect them from being damaged by being put into a 5 V-only slot.

I've verified that the lower card is a 3.3v card.

Could it be that my laptop only has a 5v slot?

Getting the #Windows98 driver for the FEther PCC-TXF #PCMCIA network card installed on my 1996 #Thinkpad760CD and then configuring TCP/IP networking reminded me what an appalling, barely-working mess Windows was at the time when this hardware was new.

The OS hangs if the card is inserted before the driver is installed. Through repeated experimentation, I found a system state during probing for #PlugNPlay hardware when the OS would get most of the way through driver installation. After several attempts and many reboots, I was in a position to attempt to configure TCP/IP.

Turns out for DHCP and DNS to work, you need to give the machine a name and manually configure the DNS server and default route IP addresses.

What I found astonishing was the lack of feedback in any of this; no log files to inspect, no graphical tooling to renew an IP address. Just lots of poking in the dark and endless reboots.
