  1. Well, this is one of the coolest things.

Muckrake, from the Brutman #PCjr forum, released this package onto the Internet Archive. He patched about 50 games that were not working in 16 color mode for the PCjr.

I have plenty more to say on this later!

  3. I have unsynchronized video clips that I'll attach, but I was able to get the actual gameplay for Paperboy showing 16 colors for #PCjr. The options screen eludes me (attached in a reply). I suppose there may be a way to just show the CGA options screen if I can't solve this odd criss-cross pattern.

I should also get MartyPC working for local debugging, because DOSBox-X is not working for me in PCjr mode at all.

  5. I will try to (safely) make this available to all, and I would like to do further testing, but here we are in the game proper, things looking nice!

  7. I think I fixed Ultima 4 for the #PCjr so it works in 16 color mode without the black horizontal bar striping. Huh.

  9. #FujiNet #RS232 #MSDOS users: FUJIPRN.SYS has had its INT 17H support fixed (now returns proper status byte). So Print Shop works, as expected.

Here it is, printing a sign on my #PCjr

  11. Another fun project for the day. I'm debugging this PCjr which won't boot - no POST, not even a beep.

It looks like the 8284A chip is not toggling the RESET pin on the 8088, so it doesn't run. I replaced a capacitor that feeds the 8284A but that had no effect. I can get the machine to boot if I pull the reset line low by hand. (Composite output is corrupted but RGB output is fine.)

I just need to find a source for 8284A chips. It looks like used is the only option.

  13. more exceptional 50s style modern art on the cover of this 1983 ibm pcjr game by nasir gebelli of apple ii/final fantasy fame

    ibm's in-house artist uncredited, sadly.

one nice touch of humanity in the illustration is the ink overdraw on the far right side, where the artist ran a ruled line from the bottom up to the hypotenuse of the cheese. these tiny "imperfections" add detail, flavour and warmth to what might otherwise be sterile design.

  15. What does it take for 640k of RAM on a #pcjr with IBM sidecars? Five of them. One for extra power, and 4 128k RAM expansions.

  17. It's extremely frustrating when I am ACTUALLY showing a #PCjr doing ACTUAL network things with #FujiNet, and I get maybe 100 views, and I see stupid shit like THIS:

    FML.

  19. Working on #msdos port of #fujinet battleship, viewing charset on #pcjr over network while hacking on the code in #emacs.

    #fujinet makes #retrocomputing and #retrogaming #gamedev even better.

  21. Used the #FujiNet enabled tile editor I wrote to draw the graphics for the #msdos version of FujiNet Battleship on my #PCjr. The graphics were exported directly onto my development PC over the network, right into #emacs.

  23. I needed a tile editor for doing our MS-DOS #gamedev.

I decided to make one that could send its data using a #FujiNet attached to my #PCjr, to my dev system.

  25. It's still weird when looking back at the 1980s and realizing that one of the most influential home computers in the USA was an absolute flop: the IBM PCjr.

Because that's what Tandy very successfully cloned and improved as the Tandy 1000 line. I didn't own one but so many of my friends/family did.

  26. #FujiNet is a WiFi Adapter for #retrocomputing and #retrogaming systems. It speaks JSON, XML, and HTTPS, so it can talk to any Internet endpoint, directly.

We use it for FujiNet 5 Card Stud, so this DOS based IBM #PCjr has no problem speaking JSON. :)

Example shown here playing 5 Card Stud btw #Atari8bit, #apple2 and #pcjr systems.
