So I turn on the Core Grafx 2 to test the FRAM mod and I am missing red again. So it was not the RGB amp... Using a different #pcengine unit or cable gate the same result. There was only 1 more thing left that could cause it (in my mind). The DIN socket... and it was... #retromodding

Done! I will leave testing for tomorrow before I turn into the hunchback of Notre Dame. Time for a snack and then to bed. #pcengine #PCエンジン #retrorevival

Installed the FM16W08 with the 5 lifted pins. Next step, soldering the wires. #pcengine #retrorevival #PCエンジン

Red was entirely missing. If I removed the red wire. the picture stayed the same. Different cable, same. Resoldered the wires, same. I ended up replacing the RGB amp (luckily I had one more) and all is good now. Maybe an FRAM mod now. #pcengine #PCエンジン #retrorevival

OK. I went ahead and jumpered J1. Turned on the Super CD-Rom² and I am getting a picture, including the RGB jailbars. There is still something off with the colors though. #pcengine #PCエンジン #retromodding #retrorevival

Tracing the 5V rail and where the pin on the DIN goes to I end up at J1 empty component location. J is for Jumper? Unbridged, that would be the reason it doesn't work... Should I bridge it and test? Or does J mean something else? #pcengine

Connected it directly to the RGB amp first to test and.... Yes! Jailbar problems though, but that's not a Super CD-Rom² problem. So let's connect everything internally and test. #pcengine #retrogaming #PCエンジン

Let's replace the plug! Tinned the ends. Soldered to the plug, tidied up, all done! Of course I connected 2 pins wrong, so I had to rewire the SCART end. At least all pins are connected, so you can always make it work. Always get confused looking at pinouts and front/back sides of plugs. #pcengine

I connected my home made #pcengine SCART cable to the RGB amp and it worked. I deduced the wires were correct and the amp as well. Connected the MD cable and it didn't work. Deduction! Something is wrong with the cable!
-
Deduction with splash of ignorance and a healthy dose of stupidity. Never modded a #megadrive yet. Bought some MD1 RGB cables to use with #pcengine s coz the DIN plug fits the. Some of you will already know where the problem was by now. I did remove unneeded caps and resistors from the SCART.

So in the pevious post it was indeed still running on composite. I was again faced with headache getting the #pcengine nodded with RGB, just like the Duo. But after a while I got a picture finally.... So to prevent others making the same mistake, here is why... elementary, dear Watson....

Tested normal AV cable with the new 8-pin socket. All OK. Hooked up RGB mod PCB by @aergan.com which I got from @pointerfunction.bsky.social (both thanks!) and still got video. Good. Bu composite is still connected, so next step is to decouple composite and see if it still works. #pcengine
-
Removed The 5-pin DIN socket, cut off the protruding parts of the 3 extra pins from the 8-pin port, then soldered it onto the board. Now to test if everything is still working (composite). #pcengine #retrorevival #retromodding

Working! Will save the RGB mod for another day... #pcengine #retrorevival

Installed the good C2275 and made my own power pass-through cable to make sure that's not causing the problem. #pcengine #retrorevival
-
So @aergan.com suggested there may be a short on the output side, but there isn't much going on on the output side. It is a direct connection to the output jack, no other components in between. Maybe the cable is bad, but measures fine.. #pcengine #retrorevival
-
Removed the transistor from the good board so I can swap it with the bad, but recapped board. This way I don't have to wait for replacement parts. #pcengine #retrorevival

Put The CD drive from the other Super CD-Rom² and it loads the game, so once I fix the power problem, this baby is functional again. Except that it still needs an RGB mod, because... RGB. #pcengine #retrorevival

OK, so if I power the Core Grafx with a separate PSU, it powers on again. Phew. So it seems it is just a power problem with the power passthru. I might be able to figure out how to get itnworking again. Now to figure out which part(s) broke. #pcengine #retrorevival

Found something. The transistor "NEC C2275" is outputting only 5V instead of the 10V (or 10.5V), so not enough voltage going into the Core Grafx. But what is causing is? Is the C2275 faulty or something else? #pcengine #retrorevival

I noticed before a small wire on the bottom of the board near the AV port. So I opened my other Super CD-Rom² and compared the 2. The other one didn't have it. but the race connects theb2 points, so it's from a previous repair. Too bad, not the cause... #pcengine #retrorevival

I thought I'd pick this #pcengine Super CD-Rom² up again. I had recapped it some time ago, but it was not reading discs. After testing some things, there was a short crack and now it will not turn on anymore. Hmm.... #retrorevival
