What a f**king life led. Truly. Back when the Met stormed into the RVT for it being a gay bar, all wearing rubber gloves to “protect” themselves during the HIV crisis, Paul O’Grady was on stage as Lily and immediately quipped “Looks like we have help with the washing up!” Iconic. -
I've been a comedy fan from a young age, I got to stay up for old Morecambe and Wise, Monty Python etc. But Comic Strip
/ French & Saunders were my 12yr old peers. Then came Mary Whitehouse Experience /Red Dwarf, then Steve Coogan and #PaulOGrady 's era.
And then he went on to make a career of just being the loveliest bloke. R.I.P. -
I love that he loved and stood up for all the underdogs, not just the canines, but the carers and cared for, the junior doctors, the poor and the ordinary. I loved that he earned millions and remained a #socialist. And I love that none of that was a contradiction, he was entirely who he was. And I love that we all felt we knew him. If there’s one phrase I keep seeing about #PaulOGrady beyond ‘quick wit’ it is ‘he was one of us’. He truly was. I’ll raise a #Guinness to those slingbacks in the sky

Deeply saddened to read the Blond Bombsite, the divine Lily Savage, Mr Paul O'Grady left us today. 67 is no age to lose one of the best of us. An amazing performer, a true gentleman and a dog lover, he will be sorely missed.
I loved Paul O'Grady and the Battersea dogs home, but I'm going to remember and miss Lil the most. -
That’s as much as I knew #PaulOGrady, but I loved him. I loved that he could segue from vicious #dragQueen to easy listening nanas’ treasure. I loved that he’d dragged #drag into the mainstream in the shadow of #AIDS and despite the pernicious #Section28. I loved that he could build an act around lampooning the Tory #Cilla, then meet her and love her, camp holiday with her, and allegedly turn her into a #Labour voter.

Gerry knew #PaulOGrady from town, and I’d seen him as #Lily at the #Bluecoat’s Alternative Festival Queen in the 1990s, compering amongst others the fabulous Plenty Sparkle and our Brian as Odette du Poetess, but I’d not been in his company.
