"... right now, the country that is pushing the hardest for keeping *some of* the liberal institutions, like the World Bank, for example, is the People's Republic of China. They want some of those institutions to remain, but have more of a Global South flavour, and I agree with them ... this is it's moment. It needs to be represented equally in the international organisation hierarchy."

"These countries like Vietnam, North Korea, China ... former Stalinist, or former Maoist, they're one party, authoritarian, *states-capitalist* systems."
#PaulBuchanan, political scientist, former Pentagon Analyst, 2026
It's so vindicating to hear someone from Buchanan's background say this. Like most anarchists in Aotearoa, I've been saying this since the 1990s, if not longer.

"NATO has now seen what the US security guarantee looks like in practice, and with Trump ranting about quitting the alliance and taking Greenland (while appeasing Putin with regard to Ukraine), they see what the future holds if they persist in trying to accomodate the bully. As for Taiwan and its US security guarantee–may the goddess protect them."

Ironically #Taiwan will likely be safer now that the US has revealed itself as a paper tiger.

"The liberal international order was built for and by white men. Post-colonial, because it really kicked off after WW2 ... but it was made for them. The rules are made for the colonial powers. So the deck was stacked against the Global South."
#PaulBuchanan, 2026
I think AVFA is going to be one of my regular podcast listens this year. Far more insight per edition than the Bradbury Bunch, and they're shorter and less frequent.

"It was never envisioned that a democracy would stage a foreign diversion from mounting domestic troubles ..."
#PaulBuchanan, former Pentagon Analyst, 2026
So EITHER;
* this claim is wrong; governments of any style, with domestic troubles and a military hardware to depreciate, will do it
OR
* the analysis is correct; military adventurism is a red flag that a government's accountability to its citizens has collapsed

If you're like me , and on an external quest to find #music like that of the legendary #Scottish band #TheBlueNile, then I must direct you to "5AM Paradise", the third album by #OldSeaBrigade. Not that the singer sounds like #PaulBuchanan - hell, who does? - but the songs are ones with the bleeding heart yearning melodies we know of The Blue Nile, and have that same simplicity, and this delicate balance between acoustic instrument and electronics.

@vik I'm reminded of writing by Matt Taibbi (or was it Aaron Mate?) about former spooks embedding themselves in news media roles and pretending to be independent, while continuing to serve the propaganda interests of their former employers. We should be as worried about Dr Paul Buchanan being a regular talking head on "global Security” in the NZ news media, as we are about Jian Yang being an MP in the NZ Parliament.
