Paula Rego ist wohl eine der bedeutendsten Künstlerinnen der Gegenwart. Eines ihrer Hauptthemen sind strukturelle Missstände und die Rechte von Frauen und Kindern. Ihre Bilder haben, wie ich finde, eine mitunter erschreckende Direktheit.
Das Folkwang Museum zeigt derzeit eine Retrospektive der britisch-portugiesischen Künstlerin.

I often pick a book about #PaulaRego off the shelf to enjoy (be puzzled by) her wonderful work... this afternoon while looking at her #nurseryrhymes series of prints I was again taken how striking yet disquieting her image of Ba Ba Black Sheep is.... on the face of it seems relatively innocent rhyme, but in Rego's rendering you pause & wonder, 'what is happening here'?

This year #PaulaRego passed & I wanted today just to remind people what a towering talent she was... not a 'great #womanartist' but a great artist (full stop). From her political works on #abortion to her works on myths and fairytales, her work was powerful & thought provoking as the recent retrospective demonstrated clearly... if you're not aware of Rego's work why not explore it today, if you are I hope you'll agree both Portugal & Britain lost a rare talent this year

Often when I see discussions of 'political' #art, #PaulaRego's extraordinary #abortion series, and their impact on the second abortion referendum in #Portugal seems to be underplayed or ignored.... having said that, all of Rego's late work is powerful; she was one of Britain's greatest contemporary artists, but always seems to be relegated to a side discussion... nothing to do with her gender I'm sure!
