Heartland International Film Festival 2026 #6: “The Debut”
Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: Since 1992 my hometown of Indianapolis has presented the Heartland International Film Festival, a multi-day, multi-theater celebration of cinema held every October. Local moviegoers have the opportunity to see over a hundred new works in the realms of documentaries, narrative features, shorts, and animation made across multiple continents from myriad points of the human experience. Heartland’s 35th edition runs October 7-18 and will be my fourth time diving in. I’ve made plans to catch at least six films in all, maybe more if time permits... Last but not least: the festival's Closing Night selection The Debut, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last month. It's the third film from actor-turned-writer/director Jesse Eisenberg, whose Poland group-tour dramedy A Real Pain played at HIFF 2024 and won an Academy Award for costar Kieran Culkin. Not ready to slow down, Eisenberg nimbly switched gears for this comedy-about-musicals -- wrote several all-new songs for its play-within-the-film and prerecorded a short, Heartland-exclusive thank-you that ran in front of our screening. Torsdag er Star Trek-dag igen
15 januar søsatte Paramount+ den seneste Star Trek-satsning, Starfleet academy med to timelange afsnit. Som Armin Shimerman sagde i TNG-afsnittet “Haven”, i en meget lille rolle som Deanna Trois medgift-kiste: “Rejoice! Mwah-ha-ha-hah!”
Okay, jeg bliver måske lidt vel eksalteret ved udsigten til andet og mere opløftende Star Trek end Strange new worlds‘ snærende nostalgitrip… Men efter at have set de første afsnit af Starfleet Academy er jeg forsigtigt optimistisk for resten af serien, der allerede er i gang med at afrunde indspilninger til anden sæson.
I Starfleet academy er handlingen lagt i samme tidsramme som Discoverys senere sæsoner: små 800 år efter Picard og Janeway suste omkring galaksearmene har en århundrede lang, total kollaps i overlysrejser reduceret den planetære Føderation til en håndfuld spredte medlemmer. Den tekniske hurdle løste Burnham og besætning i Disco sæson 3, men selvom de interstellare motorveje er åbne igen, må diplomatiske forbindelser og fodslaw genetableres.
Og med dem også Føderationens institutioner, heriblandt Stjerneflådens akademi, som er ramme for denne nye serie. Vi følger med andre ord både elever og stab gennem den første, nye årgang på den genetablerede skole. Det virkede som et sats at mikse Star Trek med collegedrama, men når akademiet her er et rumskib klar til at blive skudt ud på missioner, er forskellen måske ikke så stor igen. Også på Kirks Enterprise fløj hormonerne ret tæt nu og da.
Det første afsnit er frontlæsset med fælles baghistorie for mindst tre af seriens fortsatte figurer, før det anslag med koben og skohorn klemmes ind i den egentlige præmis. Men som en albatros letter afsnittet efter sit snublende tilløb. Vel ombord på det flyvende campus møder vi flere figurer og begreber end man rimeligt kan forventes at holde styr på — men fuglen flyver, der er ikke tid til at stoppe for spørgsmål. Vi får forhåbentlig lejlighed til at lære alle disse entusiastiske unger nærmere at kende før første sæson er ovre… og lur mig om ikke der bliver anledning til at gense pilotafsnittet senere.
Andet afsnit kobler fint den gradvise genopbygning af Føderationen ind i en meget Star Treksk meet-cute mellem vores rebel™ og en passende sødmefuld betazoid. Hvis du spiller Star Trek-drikkespillet, er det nu man råber “Imzadi!” og bunder sit glas (det må være tilstrækkeligt med et henrykt “squee!” over at igen se pukkelhvaler i San Franciscos farvande). Men det er også den unge hovedrollebesætnings fortjeneste, at i al fald jeg faktisk sluger historien — uden at behøve at skylle efter. Og vi er på alle måder langt ovre den tid, hvor TNG-forfatterne havde vanvittigt svært ved at skrive overbevisende teenagere!
Overordnet set er jeg allerede solgt på en Star Trek-serie der har kapret Holly Hunter og Paul Giamatti i ledende roller som hhv kaptajn/rektor og frydefuldt overspillet skurk. At man også har bragt Robert Picardo tilbage i hans ’90er-rolle som Voyagers doktor er en fin bonus. Man kan gå gennem afsnittene med tættekam for at finde dybere referencer hid og did i kontinuiteten, men bare den indsats der er gjort for at have ferengi, jem’hadar, kelpien og cheron i statist- såvel som større roller er en kànonbuffet for trekkies.
I tillæg er både sæt og cinematografi så storslået lækkert, at man nærmest svømmer i verdenskonstruktionen. USS Athenas atrium, der åbner sig flere etager op gennem skibet som et knudepunkt for campus, er svimlende. Modsat er skoleskibets korridorer stemningsfuldt belyst med lange lysbaner der suger en ind i billedet. Det er et af mange (for mig velkomne) træk, der viderefører Discoverys visuelle, men også tematiske arv ind i denne nye serie.
Om vi på længere sigt køber de yngre, uprøvede skuespilleres kemi… det vil tiden vise. Men jeg er optimistisk.
