The documentary by filmmaker Marq Evans is mostly the story of Roger Patterson and his involvement in the film along with Bob Gimlin. New evidence reveals for certain that the Patterson Gimlin film was a concocted hoax. Critical to the credibility, the film also includes participation by Patterson’s son, Clint. Additionally, interviews with Roger Patterson’s wife Patty, the late scientist and Sasquatch advocate Jeffrey Meldrum, and several others previously involved in promoting the reality of Bigfoot are included as they react to seeing the new evidence.
As noted in a previous post, the evidence that the PGF was faked has been substantial since day one. Those that still retained belief that this was the real deal are unlikely to be swayed, even by evidence that seems conclusive to the rest of us. From the dismissal and bad behavior from certain Bigfoot “experts” and commentators from the past few months, we saw that it was not going to be straightforward or simple to peel away the many thick layers of confirmatory information that believers have built up around their worldview. They will not readily concede that their life’s investment was based on a hoax. The Bigfoot community has some notoriously nasty characters who get extraordinarily defensive. They have already put up outrageous conspiracy ideas – that the exposure of the hoax in the film was itself faked, or does not show what it is purported to show.
However, those who were on the fence about the PGF or the reality of Bigfoot may very well be swayed. Those who had their doubts might turn and give up. I suspect, whatever happens, the Bigfoot hunting community will be forever altered.
What will Bob Gimlin have to say? He is very old and now has conflicting accounts of his involvement.
How will this be covered by the media?
Lots of questions. It looks like we are about to get some answers next month.
In the end, however, there is no doubt that the idea of Bigfoot, as a North American icon, will live on. It has outgrown its label of cryptid. It is now a popular symbol that will live on emblematic of wildness and mystery. Those who became investigators based on a personal experience or impacted by the experiences of others may give up this once most critical and persuasive film, but they won’t give up the belief that the creature is out there.
