Late May patio garden update!
The tomatoes are starting to get nice and big, tomatillos are fruiting and the sun flowers are starting to bloom! The potatoes should be coming along nicely now. Hopefully in the next month we can start harvesting them.

19 day patio garden update!
Well, things are going really well so far. My Cherokee purple tomatoes have taken off! I'm so excited for them! Only one pea plant came up, so I'll need to plant 3 more seeds. I found out that transplanting carrots is difficult, so I did my best but planted some more seeds just in case. I also added a planter of lettuce. Unfortunately no cherry tomatoes sprouted, so we will re do those as well.

We enjoyed some early spinach, and then I let it go to seed, to see if I could grow another round. These were planted late summer and have been going since.

Green Onions
I knew I could extend the useful life of store bought green onions by keeping them in a glass with water. I tried this suggested method for the first time this year. Poke them into potting soil and they will take off.

The harvesting begins!
Harvested three tomatoes yesterday, was surprised to find two more ready to go. Each day I find yet another one that's ready to fall off. And! There are new blossoms at the top of each plant (aside from the one in the smaller container), so we might be getting fruits well into autumn if we're lucky. The joys of living in USDA 9a zones 😂

Our first harvest of the season ❤️
Went straight into dinner tonight. It's so satisfying to grow things and then be able to eat them later. Both of these were grown in containers on my patio, so you don't really need a lot of space for a modest harvest of veggies.

#PatioGarden update
🍅 I don't think they know what season it is now. Granted, our weather lately has been hot and the cold snap we had two weeks ago doesn't seem to have done much. I counted 6 more baby tomato butts trying to come in. Cleaned it up the other day and threw the cuttings down as mulch for the winter.
🍆 The squash are looking a little sad, though a couple are still trying to produce blossoms. One was a producing flower but I highly doubt it got pollinated. Think these are about done for the season and we'll see if they survive winter. -
It's about to get down into the 40s tonight 🥶And possibly for the first half of the week
Gonna try to overwinter the #PatioGarden outside and see how everything does. There are three squash left, the tomato (which still has green fruit on it), and the Thai basil. The tomato is already looking a little sad, the basil spent all summer just making flowers, and the squash have new leaves just coming in. -

Harvested this little cutie today because it's starting to wrinkle. Never got any bigger than this, but at least we got a squash this year ❤️There's a couple more blossoms that could become squash but I really think it's starting to be too late in the season for them. We'll see!
In surprising news: the tomato plant is actually producing tomatoes!! I counted a total of 4 in various states of development. Had given up hope of getting any tomatoes this year, but looks like I was wrong! One is already pretty long and beginning to turn colors 🥰 Good day in the garden, I think. -

You see the bulb under that blossom? That's one thicc potential squash!
I hand pollinated it the day I found it, right before our patio door deadbolt broke. 😫When I made my way out through the window last night to water, I checked it and it's grown!! Not huge yet, but definitely bigger than this picture. Let's hope it continues to grow and we get some kind of squash out of it. 🙏 Haven't seen any other producing blossoms lately, but there are a ton of new ones popping up every day. -

Yesterday, while waiting for the storms to calm down, I spent some time cleaning up the squash plants. Just cutting off dead leaves mostly. While doing so I found 3 more producing flowers. One I hand pollinated using a Q-tip and took pollen from the three other pollinating flowers that were open. Maybe that'll help?
A week ago we had two producing flowers open. Unfortunately, it looks like we lost one of the potential squashes, probably because of the heat. 😫The other one is hanging on still. It's changing colors but not really growing, so we'll see what happens. -

The squash have so many blossoms!! It's too hot to want to poke my head out (despite the gathering clouds), but there are several cheerful yellow tulip-shaped blossoms just beginning to open. 😍Most of the blossoms on the tomato have dropped at this point. Hoping there's fruit for them yet.
Lots of ants too!! I worry about them with the wasp people coming. I hate having to call someone to deal with them, I'm just not sure what else to try. They've set up shop on just about every balcony at this point. But they're right there behind our door and it only takes one bad day before we get stung... -
Couldn't resist sharing how the plants are doing...since the wasps were cowering from the rain. The tomato is going to need a cage. I didn't know this variety could get up to 6ft tall. 😳 It went from two very sad stalks to like...6, maybe 8. Thai basil behind it is loving this humidity, it don't care about this weather. Italian basil is beginning to bounce back, but I think it would be happier in a bigger pot. Squash-feld Gang is still going strong. Brought them in to protect them from wind, not sure their roots are established enough.

Bringing in the squash babies due to a heat advisory being issued today. Heat indicies are expected to hit 108°F (42°C) today and I don't trust they'll make it through. Tomorrow is looking even hotter with a projected heat index of 113°F (45°C) 🥵
Hoping for afternoon storms seems a waste. It only adds more moisture to the air, driving up dew points, which drive up heat indexes during the day. Then the cycle repeats. I know that's our typical summer weather pattern here but...this just seems excessive this year.
