Spirituality & Religious Studies @spiritualityreligiousstudies.wordpress.com@spiritualityreligiousstudies.wordpress.com ·Isaiah, Chapter 11
This chapter is about a prophetic vision of the Messianic “shoot from the stump of Jesse” (This is about genealogy. Think of a family tree. Jesse is the root/stump. Jesus comes from Jesse, genetically through Mary) who brings ideal governance, universal peace, & the restoration of God’s people. The chapter opens with a promise that a future ruler will emerge from King David’s lineage, uniquely endowed with the 7-fold Spirit of the Lord to govern with perfect wisdom, righteousness, & justice for the poor rather than superficial judgment. This divine reign ushers in a transformed creation (famously depicted as the wolf dwelling with the lamb) where inherent hostility gives way to harmony, & the knowledge of God covers the earth “as the waters cover the sea.” Finally, the prophecy moves from cosmic peace to political restoration, describing the Messiah as a banner for the nations, uniting both Gentiles & a remnant of gathered Israelites restored from exile across the known world. Let’s get into it! Enjoy.
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom & understanding, the Spirit of counsel & of power, the Spirit of knowledge & of the fear of the Lord – & he’ll delight in the fear of the Lord. (This is thought to be about Jesus. Or about the Jewish Messiah.)
He’ll not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears. But with righteousness he’ll judge the needy, with justice he’ll give decisions for the poor of the earth. He’ll strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he’ll slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be his belt & faithfulness the sash around his waist. The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf & the lion & the yearling together (If you notice, it’s not the lion & the lamb that are together. It’s the wolf with the lamb.) & a little kid will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, & the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, & the young kid will put his hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain.
For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will rally to him, & his place of rest will be glorious. (Check out Romans 15:12)
In that day, the Lord will reach out his hand a 2nd time to reclaim the remnant that’s left of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush/upper Nile region, from Elam, from Babylonia/Shinar, from Hamath & from the islands of the sea.
He’ll raise a banner for the nations & gather the exiles of Israel. He’ll assemble the exiles of Israel. He’ll assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth. Ephraim’s jealousy will vanish, & Judah’s enemies will be cut off.
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim. They’ll swoop down on the slopes of Philistia to the west. Together they’ll plunder the people to the east. They’ll lay hands on Edom & Moab, & the Ammonites will be subject to them.
The Lord will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea; with a scorching wind he’ll sweep his hand over the Euphrates River. He’ll break it up into 7 streams so that men can cross over in sandals. There will be a highway for the remnant of his people that is left from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from Egypt.
