  1. I’m teaching first year med students this week; they are only about 6 weeks into school.

I take a few moments after one of my sessions to share some of my art and remind them to make space for the things and people outside of medicine that are important to them.

I certainly didn’t hear this enough in training. Wish I had.

  7. How can we get ahead of the next #pandemic?

Syndromic molecular testing for #infectiousdisease could offer a solution – and is already used to distinguish between respiratory diseases with similar symptoms, such as #influenza, #RSV, and #COVID19. But testing must be combined with pandemic preparedness networks in which stakeholders from science, medicine, industry, and government collaborate on prevention and mitigation efforts.

  59. CW: Blood sucking tick under the microscope

Here’s a tick - caught in the act. Ticks are blood sucking arachnids. This tick has been excised along with the skin it was biting into. The skin biopsy is about 5mm diameter for scale. The tick is the bulbous structure projecting upward from the skin underneath. Look inside and you can see it’s gut.

Below it you can see ulceration and the cavity it’s mouth has created as it burrowed through the epidermis (the outer layer of skin).

There is flanking dermal necrosis and an intense inflammatory reaction (dark purple patches around the cavity composed of aggregates of inflammatory cells).
