  1. I’m teaching first year med students this week; they are only about 6 weeks into school.

I take a few moments after one of my sessions to share some of my art and remind them to make space for the things and people outside of medicine that are important to them.

I certainly didn’t hear this enough in training. Wish I had.

  3. How can we get ahead of the next #pandemic?

Syndromic molecular testing for #infectiousdisease could offer a solution – and is already used to distinguish between respiratory diseases with similar symptoms, such as #influenza, #RSV, and #COVID19. But testing must be combined with pandemic preparedness networks in which stakeholders from science, medicine, industry, and government collaborate on prevention and mitigation efforts.

  20. CW: Blood sucking tick under the microscope

Here’s a tick - caught in the act. Ticks are blood sucking arachnids. This tick has been excised along with the skin it was biting into. The skin biopsy is about 5mm diameter for scale. The tick is the bulbous structure projecting upward from the skin underneath. Look inside and you can see it’s gut.

Below it you can see ulceration and the cavity it’s mouth has created as it burrowed through the epidermis (the outer layer of skin).

There is flanking dermal necrosis and an intense inflammatory reaction (dark purple patches around the cavity composed of aggregates of inflammatory cells).

  35. By way of #introductions,

I work in New England as a gynecologic, lung and molecular pathologist. I’m a 1st gen doc. I am a parent to two humans (teens) and one dog (Poppy).

I’m an artist and make analog paper #collage and I also enjoy #photography and #writing.

I think everyone needs more art in their lives, especially those in medicine.

I’m here to wander and explore.

  36. CW: Duodenal parasite under my microscope

Here’s a case of duodenal #Giardiasis (causative organism Giardia lamblia) at 200x magnification. The #Giardia organisms are somewhat tear-drop shaped and resemble falling leaves, overlying the surface of the duodenum (the first segment of small bowel after the stomach). The duodenal mucosa is inflamed.

  40. CW: A case of endometriosis under the microscope

A really florid case of #endometriosis down my #microscope on low power magnification. This is a cross section of small bowel (the compressed lumen visible on the right). The endometrial glands (left of my black line) are expanding and distorting the muscular wall of this segment of bowel. There are fibrovascular adhesions overlying the outside surface (the serosa) of the bowel.

Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus (most often around the ovaries and adjacent structures - but can occur anywhere). It causes significant morbidity from pain, infertility and an associated risk of ovarian cancer.
