  5. @QuietLighthouseKeeper Merci !! So yes, I'd found the first two URLs but not the third, and even less this notion of #Passmark. I'm going to take a closer look at all this, and do a bit more research. Thanks a lot ! 🖖🤓

  6. Pretty happy with my little upgrade! Went from 87th percentile to 97th on Passmark. Improvements across the board; even the disk and GPU improved and I didn't upgrade those!

  7. I'm reading the reviews on #Amazon about the #Lenovo Ideapad-1 (N4020 cpu, 4gb ram, 64gb ssd, for $144 USD). Everyone's complaining about how slow it is, how it takes forever to load #Windows and a browser due to low ram.

That's a computer with 1550 #Passmark #CPU points, which is *plenty* to run #Linux Mint on. #Mint will take 1.2 GB ram for itself, and then the browser another 0.5-2 GBs (depending on the website).

And yet, not one of the 600 reviewers thought of installing #LinuxMint.

  8. If you need an ultra-cheap #Linux laptop, consider the #Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14IGL7 14" (Celeron N4020/4GB RAM/128GB eMMC) for just $200. It's fully supported by any 5.4+ #kernel after you disable Secure & Fast Boot in BIOS (and use this if you aim to dual-boot: forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic )

That CPU has 1550 #Passmark points, which is plenty to run #Cinnamon #LinuxMint or #XFce on it. It's a very slow #laptop for #Windows 11 (not enough RAM mostly), but enough for medium-to-lightweight Linux distros.

  9. Having installed lots of #Linux on various older #laptops recently, here are my suggestions on what to install in order to perform well. First, you check the #Passmark score of your #CPU (do a google search on the cpu model and passmark). If the score is:

    - Less than 500: use #LXQT, or a wm.
    - 500-1500: #XFce, #Mate
    - 1500-3000: #Cinnamon
    - 3000+: #Gnome, #KDE

    Prefer #Ubuntu or #Fedora on machines above 2000 points. #Debian for 500+, #LinuxMint for 1000+. #Alpine for anything less than 500.

  10. My home studio/office machine is a potato, apparently

But also I suspect this is a fantastic example of sampling bias, where the dataset is composed of results submitted from people who run #PassMark performance tests

in other words, PC performance nerds

i.e. people who tend to spend a lot of money on PCs

    i.e. not me

but it's still interesting, esp before I conduct some upgrades.
