Today we celebrated Paso Pacifico's 11th annual Christmas Bird Count in Southwestern Nicaragua. Although the Ortega regime in Managua was in hiding, the birds showed up. #birding #Nicaragua #pasopacifico

Earlier this year, I had the great prilivege of meeting Jose Serafin, a fisherman from the Jocotal wetland El Salvador. Serafin worked with #PasoPacifico to protect endangered parrots. He was a great team member and very attune to parrot behaviors. This Tuesday, he was fishing in the wetland but when he got out of the boat to retrieve nets was overtaken by a floating island of water hyacinth and he drown. It took them 24 hours to locate his remains. We are devastated #RestInPeace

I recently joined #PasoPacifico #MARN #USFWS in search of nesting yellow-naped Amazon #parrots in a mangrove forest considered a parrot hideout. This critically endangered bird has been extirpated from most of Eastern #ElSalvador. We didn't find the nests, but last week, a community ranger (a former hunter) contacted me to say he was in touch with the poacher who knows where the nests are. We will soon meet with the poacher to discuss alternatives to poaching and their choice to help a species.

I am proud of my teen and his friend who are promoting #pasopacifico at #OjaiDay. He was born 9 months after I founded the organization and has known nothing else, but in the last year, he has taken up the cause with passion. After a 7 am setup and tabling for #pasopacifico at #OjaiDay community event, I drove my kids to afternoon activities and am now at Paso Pacifico HQ cleaning the office bathroom. In a workshop, I was asked to describe my leadership style. I wasn't sure how to answer except to say that of a mother. Maybe half martyr (haha) and half selfless love for my team and the fine work that we do to protect wildlife. ❤️

So much happening these days with the illegal wildlife trade of yellow-naped Amazon parrots. 81 parrots seized in China last month, smuggled as eggs in incubation suitcases. Loss of seed dispensers like Amazon parrots limits forest regeneration and further decreases our ability to combat climate change.
