The @mozilladatacollective has an open #CfP to fund the uplift or creation of datasets in this space that focus on dialogic interaction, multimodal - so video or speech paired with transcription, or which focus on the intersectionality of under-represented contexts or domains.

  11. 1. **Arabic Script**: The #Arabic script is an abjad that is used by hundreds of millions of people across the world. It is used not only for Arabic but also for other languages such as #Persian (#Farsi), #Urdu, #Pashto, and #Kurdish, among others. Modern adaptations of the script include diacritical marks that can specify vowels when necessary, such as in the #Qur'an or in texts for language learners.

  13. Audio Etymologies of the Day

At ancientsounds.net/#five I've just added a bunch of simulations showing how "five" is related to Proto-Indo-Iranian and #Sanskrit पञ्च pancha, from which come #Urdu پانچ panch (borrowed into English “punch”, a drink made of 5 ingredients), #Balochi پنچ‎ panch, #Punjabi ਪੰਜ panj (as in ਪੰਜਾਬ Punj ab “(land of) five rivers”), #Persian پنج‎ panj, European #Romani panzh, #Ossetian фондз fondz and #Pashto پنځه pinza.

And #Welsh pump, which is not Indo-Iranian obvs.

  17. Hashtag heavy #AskFedi post —

I’m collecting #Translation (s) of the phrase “I voted” for an upcoming art #Quilt project

    Interested in #languages spoken in the #SanDiego region of the US including #Kumeyaay #Chinese #Japanese, #Korean #Hmong #Thai #Laotian #Vietnamese #Tagalog #Portuguese #Russian #Armenian #Greek #Polish #Hindi
    #Persian #Somali #Dari #Pashto

My #Quilting style works best with a Latin alphabet, but I may be able to replicate non-Latin scripts if they aren’t too curvy

    TIA!

  22. More on "quern": a survival of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ in Pashto?

As I posted before, "quern" comes from #Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₂-nu- like this:
    🔈ancientsounds.net/eastern-orig

*gʷerh₂- also developed into [gur] in #Pashto and #Punjabi
    🔈ancientsounds.net/eastern-orig

This recording of Pashto ګور [gu:rħ] ends in a voiceless pharyngeal fricative
    🔈ancientsounds.net/eastern-orig

I don't know if this is normal, but Iranian languages do preserve some PIE "laryngeals" as consonants
