@dubh When it's done right, people can make a huge difference to NZ's environment by spotting emergent weeds as they're beginning to establish.
My favourite recent example is Dave Holland's discovery in 2020 of wild black swallow-wort on the edge of the Timaru Botanic Gardens. That was the first wild record of the species anywhere in NZ, and it's a wetland weed overseas. Timaru Council and Environment Canterbury staff stepped in with control, over several years, and now it's gone.
That's one environmental weed nipped in the bud before it could get started.

@pathunstrom i remember when citsci2017 made the difficult (from a logistics point of view) decision to move their conference due to discriminatory laws passed in NC. they were ahead of the curve (nearly a decade), given the situation today.
i applaud that decision then and submit it as inspiration to other conferences to hopefully make the right decision now.

Sorry to miss the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this year, but observed a few birds in Paris instead. It's nice to see that is noted as #citizenscience activity (so the Observer expects readers to know what this is). For #FungiFriday have a looksie at the time a few weeks ago when I found a bunch of Onion Earthball (#Scleroderma cepa) #mushrooms! Here's one I was documenting for #iNaturalist that *spontaneously* exploded ashy black spores all over my arm and chest (not in the face, thankfully😅).
