"Authoritarianism always sees fact and truth as delivered by journalism, by history and by science as rival sources of power. Those are radically democratic things. You can be a king or a commoner, and the rules of gravity are still the same. So they attempt to undermine those things."

"They [MAGA] need me to suffer in order to feel great again. I don't need them to suffer in order to feel great again. I want all of our kids to succeed. And that is a major difference between me and MAGA."

"It matters to people that this president is so nakedly corrupt, that the Supreme Court is controlled by partisan hacks, that America’s image around the globe lies in tatters, and that the entire federal government has been degraded. They can see the connections between the way power operates and the fact that they don’t have affordable health care or better wages."

"In a recent NBC News poll, 59% of voters said the economic and political systems are stacked against people like them, and 84% agreed that 'the very rich and powerful are above the law when they do something wrong, they look out for each other, using their power and connections to get special treatment.'”

"Imagine an election where every voter has the opportunity to opine directly to politicians on precisely the issues they care about. They’re not expected to spend hours becoming policy experts. Instead, an AI Interviewer walks them through the subject, answering their questions, interrogating their experience, even challenging their thinking.
Voters get immediate feedback on how their individual point of view matches—or doesn’t—a party’s platform, and they can see whether and how the party adopts their feedback. This isn’t like an opinion poll that politicians use for calculating short-term electoral tactics. It’s a deliberative reasoning process that scales, engaging voters in defining policy and helping candidates to listen deeply to their constituents.
This is happening today in Japan. Constituents have spent about eight thousand hours engaging with Mirai’s AI Interviewer since 2025. The party’s gamified volunteer mobilization app, Action Board, captured about 100,000 organizer actions per day in the runup to last week’s election.
It’s how Team Mirai, which translates to ‘The Future Party,’ does politics. Its founder, Takahiro Anno, first ran for local office in 2024 as a 33 year old software engineer standing for Governor of Tokyo. He came in fifth out of 56 candidates, winning more than 150,000 votes as an unaffiliated political outsider. He won attention by taking a distinctive stance on the role of technology in democracy and using AI aggressively in voter engagement.
Last year, Anno ran again, this time for the Upper Chamber of the national legislature—the Diet—and won. Now the head of a new national party, Anno found himself with a platform for making his vision of a new way of doing politics a reality."

Democracy is better than Authoritarianism and way better than Monarchism. However, Representative Democracy is a Fraud. Participatory Democracy is way better than Representative Democracy.
"The fact is that any selection mechanism for representatives based on human choice (and in fact any selection mechanism other than random selection) will have inegalitarian consequences. Why is that? Because human choice is inherently discriminatory and homogenizing. Whether the skew is rational or not, choice is biased toward salient traits, or traits that are seen as superior in some ways, typically because they are rare and unevenly distributed. Those include wealth and social status, of course, but also charisma, confidence, eloquence, and height.
As a result, elections are bound to generate an inegalitarian distribution of power that is not empirically contingent but structural. So even assuming ideal conditions, which are never found in real life, not even in Scandinavian countries, elections will send to power an unrepresentative group of people over-sampling certain traits, including those that are associated with being a confident elite, and under-sampling the shy.
Am I suggesting that giving people a choice of representatives is a bad thing? No. It is plainly an improvement over rulers imposed by tradition or force. At best, however, it yields a liberal oligarchy: the rule of the few, legitimized and constrained by popular consent. That arrangement is preferable to its alternatives, but it falls short of genuine democracy—and therefore of the quality of governance we should reasonably expect from it. The alternative is not to abandon representation, but to reconfigure it."

"We are ardent believers in the power of government to improve people’s lives, and appreciate the frustration with unnecessary delays. In some cases, especially exclusionary zoning and other land use rules in wealthy suburbs, the current legal restrictions are in fact excessive. However, the proper answer to government dysfunction and the authoritarian threat at home and abroad is largely the same today as it was during the New Deal: Rather than railroad the public with top-down directives or megaprojects imposed by Washington and state capitols, we must renew our national commitment to democracy and public participation with ambitious acts of bold economic governance.
The Trump Administration’s ability to move with lightning speed to impose unwanted infrastructure like Alligator Alcatraz on unwilling host communities, militarize cities with masked police and troops, and increase surveillance of Americans makes clear the urgency of balancing the state’s capacity to act decisively with the need for democratic legitimacy. “State capacity” is not inherently good: The what and how of state action matter.
Moreover, in the medium and long term, the tradeoff between state capacity and democratic participation disappears—and even reverses. Public input into government decisions, including in environmental review procedures, not only restrains the worst tendencies of unaccountable state power but also enhances the capacity of the state itself, by providing valuable feedback to state technocrats about what is working and what isn’t. While turning off these feedback channels may generate a sugar high of quick results, doing so, as state capacity liberals propose, dooms effective governance further down the road. Top-down technocracy is brittle, and availing ourselves of shortcuts around the public is ultimately self-defeating."

Charles Duhigg distinguishes "organizing" from "mobilizing" in a way I did not know before, then proceeds to classify a series of movements/campaigns as one or the other.
The real criterion seems to be how much decentralisation and local autonomy/focus a movement allows and fosters.
Reminds me of #Wikimedia chapters, which can be extremely varied and contain all sorts of people as long as we all believe in free licenses.

"Today, parts of Minzhu Village recall hip corners of London or Berlin. But the neighborhood’s transformation followed a different path to what often occurs in the metropoles of the West. Although the process implied the same kind of qualitative changes associated with gentrification in many major cities, it did not displace the local working population in Minzhu Village. Instead, it improved their lives, drawing them increasingly into the living standards of the urban middle class — out of poverty, and into what the CPC calls “moderate prosperity”, a stage of development where basic needs are met and a comfortable standard of living becomes available to all. This was grounded in needs articulated before, during, and after the redevelopment process by members of the community. The farmers’ market was modernized, the stream was cleaned up, the canteen was built, and new institutions and infrastructures for leisure, recreation, and community development were constructed around the Village.
This process — of broad, popular consultation that transforms the lives of working people — is the cornerstone of the Chinese notion of “whole-process people’s democracy”. It reflects a revolutionary methodology that seeks to develop a “mass line” by continuously interpreting, systematizing, and realizing the ideas of the people. This can be a difficult process. Xiong Jie and Tings Chak have described in detail how it worked during the restoration of Erhai Lake, which involved a prolonged back-and-forth between party officials and local residents to overcome conflicts, reach compromises, and gain popular support for practical solutions.
The approach fundamentally challenges the prevailing narratives in the West about the Chinese government’s lack of democracy and popular legitimacy — suggesting, instead, that the Chinese democratic process is in many ways more responsive and more participatory...."

With the antics and atrocities committed by Trump since the start of his second term, there has never been a better time than today to implement a system of participatory democracy, or at least a political system in which political representatives are chosen by sortition. I honestly think it would be very difficult to achieve an outcome as bad as the one we have now.
"In governance, sortition is the selection of public officials or jurors at random, i.e. by lottery, in order to obtain a representative sample.
In ancient Athenian democracy, sortition was the traditional and primary method for appointing political officials, and its use was regarded as a principal characteristic of democracy. Sortition is often classified as a method for both direct democracy and deliberative democracy.
Today sortition is commonly used to select prospective jurors in common-law systems. What has changed in recent years is the increased number of citizen groups with political advisory power, along with calls for making sortition more consequential than elections, as it was in Athens, Venice, and Florence."

As we head into an Australian Federal Election year, with the world on fire & political institutions crumbling, I thought I’d reshare this piece I wrote late last year. Partly as a reminder to myself.
We can build our new world in the compost of the old. Let’s do it.

"How could a two-party system built on patriarchal, colonial, Christian values of another era ever properly represent the diverse nation Australia has become?" - Tim Dunlop
-
"Genuinely democratic parties aren’t brands, businesses, or elite factions seeking to earn votes but institutions through which members cooperate to shape their society. Some difficult compromises will still be necessary — democratic participation only guarantees a fair hearing and an equal part in collective decision-making — but the character of these compromises will be fundamentally altered. While liberal parties offer compromises that they hope members will accept, democratic parties reach compromises through members’ deliberation — members of democratic parties don’t support policies, but decide them.
Democratization begins by no longer speaking of “the party” earning our votes but of “our party” enacting our joint decisions. The view of the democratic citizen-member is “This is my party, along with my friends and allies, which we use to govern our society; its staff are our employees, its elected members are our spokespeople, its policies are our decisions, and its victories are our victories.” To the extent that this is not yet true, the work of democratization is not yet finished."

And one of them, Australian-born Natalie Bennett, has written a book all about radical politics, called "Change Everything". Lots of ideas about #democracy and #ParticipatoryDemocracy, dismantling #capitalism, #UBI, #disarmament and more.
I'm going to be interviewing Natalie (Baroness Bennett, mind you!) on July 9, on Zoom.

#OpenAccess #ParticipatoryDemocracy #InternetDemocracy #InternetGovernance: "When was the last time you participated in an election for a Facebook group or sat on a jury for a dispute in a subreddit? Platforms nudge users to tolerate nearly all-powerful admins, moderators, and “benevolent dictators for life.” In Governable Spaces, Nathan Schneider argues that the internet has been plagued by a phenomenon he calls “implicit feudalism”: a bias, both cultural and technical, for building communities as fiefdoms. The consequences of this arrangement matter far beyond online spaces themselves, as feudal defaults train us to give up on our communities’ democratic potential, inclining us to be more tolerant of autocratic tech CEOs and authoritarian tendencies among politicians. But online spaces could be sites of a creative, radical, and democratic renaissance. Using media archaeology, political theory, and participant observation, Schneider shows how the internet can learn from governance legacies of the past to become a more democratic medium, responsive and inventive unlike anything that has come before."

#AI #GenerativeAI #OpenAI #AIGovernance #AIRegulation #ParticipatoryDemocracy: "The company wanted to find out whether deliberative technologies, like Polis, could provide a path toward AI alignment upon which large swaths of the public could agree. In return, Megill might learn whether LLMs were the missing puzzle piece he was looking for to help Polis finally overcome the flaws he saw in democracy.
On May 25, OpenAI announced on its blog that it was seeking applications for a $1 million program called “Democratic Inputs to AI.” Ten teams would each receive $100,000 to develop “proof-of-concepts for a democratic process that could answer questions about what rules AI systems should follow.” There is currently no coherent mechanism for accurately taking the global public’s temperature on anything, let alone a matter as complex as the behavior of AI systems. OpenAI was trying to find one. “We're really trying to think about: what are actually the most viable mechanisms for giving the broadest number of people some say in how these systems behave?” OpenAI's head of global affairs Anna Makanju told TIME in November. “Because even regulation is going to fall, obviously, short of that.”"
