The team monitored the health of over 500,000 Chinese adults over 12 years, including 1,131 people with Parkinson's and 2,949 with other neurodegenerative diseases. They investigated the impact of smoking through self-reported smoking frequency and measuring carbon monoxide in breath - usually an indicator of smoking. The researchers say both smoking history and exhaled carbon monoxide were linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's. While smokers generally had higher carbon monoxide levels in their breath, the researchers say non-smokers with high carbon monoxide levels also had a lower risk of Parkinson's - suggesting carbon monoxide may be independently protective against Parkinson's. Australian researchers highlight that smoking increases the risk of a host of different health problems, but say this finding could help us better understand why Parkinson's disease bucks the trend.
