There's a good one of these near a small baseball field in Bridgewater NJ that I always look at from the train.

BBC: Market could lose 100 stalls due to Google parking. “North Weald Market, based at the North Weald Airfield in Essex, usually hosts 300 stalls selling clothing, homewares and food every Saturday. Google paid Epping Forest District Council £88.2m for 52 acres (21ha) of land at the former RAF airbase in 2024, and planned to build a car park on some of the market space.”

Protective safe parking programs for the unhoused
When a community is working to tackle problems associated with unaffordable housing and homelessness, it must do so with a multi-pronged approach. As with most things, one size does not fit all, and the same is true for those that are unhoused.
Source: srcity.orgTwo previous posts from earlier this week identified the topics of transitional tiny home villages for the unhoused, as well as those metropolitan areas that have made the largest strides in provided such housing. This post addresses the issue of those unhoused residents who chose to live in their car or recreational vehicle instead of a tiny home or other type of shelter. This post does NOT explore these choices themselves, but instead how cities across the nation are trying to provide a smorgasbord of options for the unhoused.
Source: facebook.comWhile not as common of an approach as tiny houses or shelters, safe parking zones are an important tool for addressing homelessness. All too often, the unhoused are victimized while on the streets, with even a car providing limited protection. In addition, by providing safe parking zones with facilities, they help improve sanitation and health. Such a program can also help reduce the number of service calls to police by concerned citizens.
Source: bech.orgListed below are cities where safe parking zones have been established. Unfortunately, safe parking programs have been axed in several places, particularly in the Denver, Colorado region do to budget cuts, funding challenges, and legal issues.
From an advocacy standpoint, it is frustrating that more local, state, and national leaders do not see the economic benefits of such grassroots programs. Each unhoused person that successfully leaves the streets is another potential renter or homeowner and a taxpaying productive citizen. Multiply that times the number of unhoused people in a community and you have a significant economic boost…easily equivalent to a new employer in town.
Source: cabq.orgThe list will be updated as needed. Please feel free to forward any additions, suggestions, or corrections. Once again, nearly all the examples are from the western half of the country.
Peace!

Friday is farmers market day at Del Monte Center, Monterey. Don’t know who rode this bike to DMC today, just appreciate that they did. Related tips in “Bike to Farmers Markets” https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/food-for-all and in “Shopping by Bike”: https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/unique-attractions
DMC is in city of Monterey. The city’s bike-aware leaders, e.g., Mayor Tyller Williamson and Council Member Gino Garcia (whose day job is working for Ecology Action of Santa Cruz / Lets Modo) may be unaware that we formerly had in that Shopping section of the Tips guide a detailed map listing all Del Monte Center bike rack locations. Their ED at that time himself biked to work! Why is that detailed map no longer in our guide? Because DMC 🔥REMOVED those bike racks! 😭#NotProgress #GoingBackward #CarbonEmissions #TrafficCongestion #Monterey #ActOnClimate #ClimateCrisis #transportation

@Small
I bet we'd be cooler and healthier with parking lots more like the ones by these little houses. Instead of he flat wide heat trapping asphalt some nice green ground cover with little rocks for tire tracks... Even without the green ground cover I guess the gravel would be better for slowing the rain down, maybe get more water into the ground in stead of rushing into the rivers..

Reminds me of how they had to reduce the size of parking lots in SimCity.
"When I started measuring out our local grocery store, which I don't think of as being that big, I was blown away by how much more space was parking lot rather than actual store. "

Group warns of potentially polluted water identified at #MaineBeaches
Maine Public | By Caty DuDevoir
Published July 11, 2023 at 2:39 PM EDT"Thirty-six beaches in Maine were considered potentially unsafe for swimming on at least one day of #bacteria testing in 2022, according to a recent report.
"Sewage overflows and runoff pollution contaminated the waters surrounding multiple popular swimming spots such as #GoochsBeach in #Kennebunkport and #FerryBeach in #Scarborough.
"John Rumpler is the clean water director at the Environment Maine Research & Policy Center who co-authored the report.
"When we pave over everything with #ParkingLots, #StripMalls and big #roadways, that water has nowhere to go, so it sweeps up all the #pollution on the surface and pulls it right into nearby #rivers, #streams, and #coastalwaters, or overwhelms our combined sewage systems,' Rumpler says.
"Rumpler says that preserving the state's #wetlands can restore and expand the land's natural capacity to absorb rain water, and continuing to repair #sewage #infrastructure across the state is a step in the right direction.
"With the heavy precipitation these last few weeks, Rumpler is worried that pollution levels may be higher.
"Beach water quality updates can be found on the Maine Department of Environmental Protection website."

If #Cities Are Going To Be Packed With #ParkingLots, They Should All Have #Solar Canopies
More than 5% of developed land in the United States is dedicated to parking lots.
A study attempted to determine what would happen if #Walmart covered all 3,571 of its Super locations’ parking lots with #solarpanels, the solar power generation would be 11.1GW. That’s about the same as twelve large coal-fired #powerplants, enough electricity to provide power to 8.325 million homes. https://jalopnik.com/if-cities-are-going-to-be-packed-with-parking-lots-the-1850880420 -
As noted a bit earlier in this thread, repurposing #ParkingLots (adding #solar) can be a highly effective and ultimately cost-efficient way to reduce overall #emissions and mitigate #ClimateChange.
Another, maybe more mid-term option could be to enhance the amount of #greenery in such lots, or to use greenery instead of or along with solar.
All combined with improved #transit, public and personal, for an Everything, Everywhere, All at Once approach.

#Florida’s #Environmental Failures Are a Warning for the Rest of the U.S.
By Jeff VanderMeer, July 12, 2023
"Dynamite and dredging were the tools chosen to drain the #Everglades and tame the waters. What once belonged to the #Tequesta #NativeAmericans, amid a wealth of #wildlife, became #ParkingLots and #Hotels owned by #WhitePeople. Today, many of those parking lots are submerged during #storms and, in some areas, the hotels overlook waters #toxic with #industrial and #construction #waste..."
