I should know by now after raising 2 daughters through the teen years and out the other side that this is not personal and doesn’t last, but fucking hell the heartbreak when your 14 year old stops wanting to spend time with you is really real.

My teenage daughter (14) prefers to hang out in her room chatting to her friends online, than hanging out with me, and that’s absolutely as it should be. But every now and then, she’ll come in to the living room and just flop in for a hug and tell me about a sad thing that just happened in a film they watched or game they played. Also, absolutely as it should be 🥰
Edited because my phone autocorrected the hash tag to PatentingTeens and I don’t think that’s something we should be doing 😂

My teenage daughter (14) messaged me the peace emoji today ✌️
This has been a secret safe word since she first started going to friends houses at age 11. It means I need to call with a made up reason to go collect her early.
Today it was because she was bored and didn’t want her friend to know she was bored.
That’s ok. The whole point is that she doesn’t need to justify it or have a ‘good enough’ reason.
Next time it could be that shes not feeling safe, and knowing that she will always have that out whatever the reason and without having to explain is vital.

Today while teaching I officially entered the phase of life where my kids and my students use the same vocabulary. Not sure whether to be proud or alarmed.

Leaving for a trip, without my teenage son, so I do the usual prep : make his favorite dinner (butter chicken) that I know he’ll eat for the next three days, and a pan of brownies. Every time. 💕

My teenager reminds me that I responded to an earlier request for assistance with, "I can't. I have a cat."
But cat cuddling *is* harder to interrupt than pistachio eating!
In my defense, I had been working all day to get our former feral to settle into a cuddle as he was having a particularly stressed out day. (The dog's expressions of concern and desire to connect were not helping.)
