The #Soviets invented the paratrooper in the mid 1930s, but it inspired everyone else to copy them, including #Germany...

The #Fallschirmjäger were #Germany's own #paratrooper branch, designed to deal a swift and fatal blow behind the enemy's lines. They were deployed with great success in #Scandinavia and the #Benelux, but they come too close to the sun when they attempt to invade #Crete

  5. C-47 with parachutist exiting! This C-47 was doing what it was intended to do - only over Barnes Regional Airport, Massachusetts, not Normandy on the 6th of June, 1944. Wearing the invasion stripes promulgated by the Allies at the very last moment (and with the paint often crudely applied by yard brooms), the C-47s, along with Short Stirlings and other aircraft, would make history that night. The parachutist is one of a 'stick' using authentic 'round' chutes replicating those of the period. #C47 #Douglas #DDay #WW2 #SecondWorldWar #Normandy #aircraft #aviation #paratrooper #parachutist #invasionstripes #invasion #France #Normandycampaign #BandofBrothers #Allies #BarnesRegionalAirport #airport #Massachusetts #USA #history #photography #avgeek #6thofJune #ShortStirling #parachute #roundchute #parachutejump #1944 #airport #airborne #USAAF
