Today is the start of the 6th edition of Monsoon Beauty, an annual Community Science programme to learn about biodiversity , document, share & be part of a community. The event is 61 days long .
This year we are leaning further into a quieter, more contemplative spirit, taking things slow, and remembering always that we are people and nature, not data.
Two of my highlights are shared here.

Meet the morning mechanic. A paper wasp steps across cold steel, orange antennae forward and yellow-black armor shining. Tiny feet, steady focus, a breath of stillness before takeoff. Beauty in small scales. ✨

Peppa the paperWasp was doing this yesterday—blowing a droplet of apple juice right out of her mouth and sucking it back in—several times. It was fascinating to see. I assume it was enjoyable to her?

The second paperWasp queen is processing the plant pulp ball (?) in the bottom right of this photo. Her nest is under the storage bench lid, which is open (at 90 degree angle)—in the top left.

The #warmthloving #paperwasp #Polistes #dominula (Polistinae) was originally native to central/ southern Europe and Asia, but is increasingly spreading towards Scandinavia due to #globalwarming. In e.g. Australia and #NorthAmerica it occurs as #neozoan. 50 or more nest cells are created by one or several young #queens with the strongest subdueing its competitors. The wasp can be #parasitized by #Xenos #vesparum (#Strepsiptera).

I wish I knew what was going on between the paperWasp and the hoverFly-like wasp. The paperWasp (on the right) seemed to be guarding the okra flower bud while the other wasp seemed to be bothering.
[edit: originally I assumed the other wasp to be a hoverFly.]

The #WaspHouse in my plot of the #CommunityGarden, and another peek of the #paperWasp queen.
I don’t know if it’s the same queen who originally built a nest in the underside of the small plastic storage bench (the first photo shows the part of it in the left). I attached the nest under the roof of the waspHouse.

Spotted a paperWasp buzzing around my lemon tree. She landed on the milkweed to rest. I LOVE paperWasps. ❤️🐝✨

I don’t see the #paperWasp queen in there from this angle (the only angle I can stick my phone’s selfie cam). It was a cooler day, and they stay on top of the nest to rest, so it’s possible we can’t see her—but that’s just my wishful thinking. I want this to work so bad. 🤞🐝💕

Had a chance to relocate the small #paperWasp nest to the #waspHouse this evening.
As I suspected, the nest wasn’t well-adhered to the smooth plastic lid. It would have fallen off eventually as the nest gets bigger/heavier. It came off easily.
The queen flew around nervously while we worked to set it up. I forgot to bring a button, so I sacrificed one from my shirt.
I didn’t see her find her nest in the new location. Pls send good vibes her way! Thank you.🙏❤️🏠🐝

Here’s the #waspHouse we made, using some scrap wood. The front opens for access needed for this case. We’ll attach it to the wooden stake and place it near the storage bench in which the queen made the nest. I love paperWasps. They’re beautiful.

Entomologists, #paperWasp people, I have a question.
I want to relocate the small paperWasp nest with the queen to the wooden waspHouse we made. She made a nest under the small plastic storage bench lid. It’s been awkward every time I open the lid.
What’s the best way to re-attach it to the waspHouse? Thank you for your ideas and insights.I’ve done it before (pls see the video above), using a twist tie, but as the nest got heavier, it failed to support the weight.

Here’s the video of the successful relocation of the #paperWasp nest in 2020.
(🔊 BGM: classical piano music is used; Scriabin)I’m afraid this plastic cap isn’t safe for them anymore—a spider took a residence last summer.

The #paperWasp queen was studying me while I took some photos this evening. I’m still thinking about making her own wasp house, like a small version of a birdhouse. I gotta do it soon though before her helpers emerge. 😉🫶🐝💕

A #paperWasp queen made a nest under the lid of the storage bench in my communityGarden plot. We’ll be gently opening and closing it from now on. They’re docile, and avid #pollinators, so I think we can share the storage bench. We’ll see…
