I'm one of those who thinks #AI training on copyrighted texts is #fairuse. But it may be relevant that #PaperQA2, the prototype tool in question here, is from a startup called #FutureHouse funded by #EricSchmidt. Here's Schmidt's position on AI training and #copyright:

A paper interesting for other reasons includes this aside about a prototype #AI tool: "When it is given a query, #PaperQA2 searches several academic databases for relevant papers and tries to access the full text of both #OpenAccess and #paywalled content. ([The team behind the tool] has access to many paywalled papers through its members’ academic affiliations.)"
