Update. Related:
"Opening Pandora's box: Paper mills in conference proceedings."
https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.22458From the abstract: "This study aims to identify papers in conference proceedings whose titles have been offered for sale on social media platforms. We collected more than 4,000 unique publication offers from more than 200 social media channels and used semi-automated methods along with human assessment to match offers with papers published in IEEE conference proceedings. We identified 1,720 papers in 286 IEEE conference proceedings, accounting for up to 23.51% of an individual conference. These problematic papers are co-authored by more than 6,500 researchers from over 3,500 affiliations in 55 countries."

Update. You can now see the preprint itself, on #arXiv.
https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.24576From the abstract: "We assemble BuyTheBy, a large, annotated dataset of timestamped, text-based paper mill advertisements from seven businesses operating out of seven different countries. The dataset consists of 18,710 individual advertisements, of which 15,839 have prices listed. Among these there are 20,598 positions listed as for sale on 5,567 unique products in 14 different product categories with 51,812 timestamped price data points."

"Thousands of shady ads sell paper authorship for cash, large-scale investigation finds."
https://www.science.org/content/article/thousands-shady-ads-sell-paper-authorship-cash-large-scale-investigation-findsPS: This article from _Science_ reports important news about paper mills. But apart from that, note that it draws from an #arXiv preprint that hasn't been released yet. It's a preprint preprint, and from _Science_. A nice example of the ongoing #ScholComm transformation.

Our new 📄 in Current Alzheimer Research looks at a strange, and worrying, phenomenon in scientific writing: tortured phrases. Instead of blood-brain barrier, some papers use bizarre alternatives like blood-brain obstruction or blood-cerebrum boundary.

I'd not heard of Fengkai Group before I saw their LinkedIn advert. They're offering paid positions to be a guest editor for special issues in SCI- and Ei Compendex-indexed journals (the latter is Elsevier's engineering index). That's weird, I thought.
Csaba Szabo has heard of them: he commented on his guest post on Leonid Schneider's blog about uncovering paper mill activity, at https://forbetterscience.com/2025/05/19/a-sting-inside-a-papermill/#comment-762891, to note the worrying approach Fengkai made to him in May.
Christopher Tang got in similar email in June: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lets-stand-up-against-unethical-research-behavior-christopher-tang-eur3c
More than 20 of my LinkedIn connections follow Fengkai Group and several are connected to the LinkedIn account that posted the advert.
We all need to be careful not to legitimise questionable organisations by associating with them.

Update. In response to this problem (previous post, this thread), some publishers are desk-rejecting papers based on open health datasets. The problem is not the quality of the data, but the absence of additional work to validate findings.
Two reports:
1. "Journals and publishers crack down on research from open health data sets," Science, Oct 8, 2025.
https://www.science.org/content/article/journals-and-publishers-crack-down-research-open-health-data-sets2. "AI: Journals are automatically rejecting public health dataset papers to combat paper mills," BMJ, Oct 15, 2025.

"A growing tide of fake papers is flooding the scientific record and proliferating faster than current checks can rid them from the system, scientists warn.
The source of the trouble is “paper mills,” businesses or individuals that charge fees to publish fake studies in legitimate journals under the names of desperate scientists whose careers depend on their publishing record.
The rate of fake papers generated by these operators roughly doubled every 1.5 years between 2016 and 2020, according to a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“The entire structure of science could collapse if this is left unaddressed,” said study author Luís Amaral, a physicist at Northwestern University.
Paper mills look for weak links, such as lax verification protocols, in the typically rigorous publication machinery, then exploit those to place hundreds of fabricated studies with vulnerable journals or publishers, according to scientist investigators who have been tracking and cataloging their work.
It can be a costly mess to clean up.
Publishers who have become aware of suspected paper mill activity have been forced to retract hundreds of papers at once, and in some cases shut down journals."

A powerful new study (Richardson et al., @PNASNews 2025) reveals the scale of systematic research fraud: fake papers are doubling every 1.5 years - ten times faster than real science. Retractions and deindexing can't keep up. Journals look away. Universities stay silent. Ministries protect their own.

The authors call for independent, conflict-free structures with real power to act.

My panel this morning at the European Association of Science Editors (@EASE) conference in Oslo was on the use of new tech in research integrity checks, alongside Caroline Sutton in person and Kim Eggleton and Jane Alfred online.
Our conversation was great (if I say so myself), helped by the chairing by Brian Cody. I thought it would be interesting to see how others here would answer Brian's questions:
1. What are the top research integrity concerns for scholarly publishers, and how much are they discipline-specific?
2. Technical checks can be overwhelming for journals. How to manage manuscript checklists from a process perspective?
3. How do publishers considering new automation / tools decide what's necessary vs nice to have?
4. Case studies of implementing tools.
5. Many tools only apply to English publications. What tools should non-English journals know about?
6. How can publishers and editors get involved in tool development?
7. What is the potential for AI to improve research integrity checks vs human oversight?

Here's my presentation from yesterday's open lecture! We discussed modern challenges to academic integrity: from #PaperMills to #data falsification in research articles
👉 http://dx.doi.org/10.13140/RG.2.2.20192.29443
We also explored the role of AI tools, like #ChatGPT, in detecting violations and tackling academic fraud, and dug into the question—What should university research managers do if their staff regularly buys articles from 'paper mills'? :ohno:

Today I got the editorial decision on a manuscript I reviewed for a SpringerNature journal - and with it the appraisals of the 10 (!) other reviewers. They don’t inspire much confidence about the future of science under the current publishing system. I rejected the manuscript due to textual plagiarism and methods not suited to answer the questions posed (likely because the results were fictitious to begin with).
