Look!! It's me!

I got a huge and pleasant surprise yesterday when one of our recent graduates from our B.Sc. Conservation and Ecology programme, the talented Chinese botanist Shuizetinglan Dong (水澤汀蘭), returned to NZ and stopped by the university to present me with this artwork.

Shuizetinglan designed it and Chinese papercut artist Qin Le (秦乐) made it, using an art style created in honour of Ku Shulan (库淑兰). Shuizetinglan thinks this is the first piece of Qin Le's art outside of China.

It features stylised versions of many of the species I've studied and the orchids and NZ king ferns that Shuizetinglan studied while doing his degree.

I love it! It's such an incredibly thoughtful gift and will take pride of place on my office wall.

I asked and Shuizetinglan was happy for me to share it with you.
