Mandy 2018 tries to out-do the weirdness of Only God Forgives
In 2019 on the Cannes film festival director Nicolas Winding Refn ( the director of the 2013 film Only God Forgives ) released episodes 4 and 5 of his ( then ) new multi-episode picture Too Old To Die Young. Episode 5 titled "The Fool" contains a car chase scene. Some argue it is one of the most romantic car chases in cinematic history. The joke is, that the car chase is set to a romantic Barry Manilow's 1974 hit "Mandy", making the juxtaposition rather hilarious in nature. But given the ass-born theory specialist that I am, I must suggest an interesting twist to this whole ordeal. During the principal photography of the first episode of Too Old To Die Young another film-maker Panos Cosmatos released a film, strangely similar in style to whatever Refn is doing. And his film was called Mandy. We can theorize that maybe Refn responded, in his strange way, recognizing the stylistic similarities, so to speak.

Vi har ikke lært en skid af forrige afsnit, og også dette afsnit er optaget over Zoom. I can see why people didn’t like Beyond the Black Rainbow but it spoke to me of psychonaut John Lilly and the world my head inhabited in the late 80s. That of course links it with Altered States and the works of Ken Russell, although Cosmatos and Russell are very different… John Lilly characteristically liked Altered States despite or perhaps because of its absurdity. Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" episode "The Viewing" directed by Panos Cosmatos has an amazing New Retro Wave / Synth Wave soundtrack.
Unlike what Lionel Lassiter states, the music was not composed in Venice by Massimo Contini.

Watched this last night. If #PanosCosmatos directed a movie like #FRESH and was influenced by #STAGE FRIGHT, #EVILDEAD and #THEHOUSEOFTHEDEVIL..this is what you’d end up with!
Really dug it but was in the mood for something like this so be warned ,)

#TheViewing episode of #CabinetOfCuriosities is by far my favorite. Can't believe they let #PanosCosmatos do his thing, from the aesthetics to the synth to the drug-fueled madness. This show needed more unique episodes like this, the rest of it felt a bit too conventional at times.
