  1. I went looking for a hantavirus song and found a tiny musical news cycle: haunted folk-pop, comic COVID déjà vu, LEGO conspiracy rap, and AI-generated science explainer. Also: Google News is a mess. In case you hadn't noticed.

  2. Today's blog post: Pandemic music was not always about remembrance. Sometimes it was about distraction: parody songs, TikTok dances, sea shanties, Boccaccio, and the long, liminal hours in the shade of crisis. Plus a Kermit the Frog reference.

  3. We don’t talk about COVID… except when we do.

A blog post on parody, memory, and how a crisis becomes background noise. And a bit of nostalgia for 2022's relative simplicity

  4. Before we see them, we hear them. Cowbells. Clappers. Warning before encounter. "The real challenge is stigma."

On #WorldLeprosyDay, I explore the uneasy balance of care and exclusion through Cadfael S1E3.

  5. Aaaand, that's a wrap (except for finals and grading)

Ended with Bach. So lovely, so sad.

  6. Today's blog post is on musical responses to toilet paper hoarding during the early part of the pandemic, with musical examples ranging from the classical to classic rap. Ahem.

  7. For my music and pandemics class, I have them read about the music meditations of a hospice nurse during Covid, and that assignment opens big, important questions about music and its meanings for us as humans. It's really quite wonderful.

  8. Humor and the flu, two things that go together like... like... like...

Okay, let me start over: for a clever and very timely capture of thinking surrounding the 2009 Swine Flu pandemic, PutnamPig's Swine Flu Song -- issued as it was just getting its foothold in the US -- is probably the best go-to. Find out why in this blog post!

  9. Today's blog post is on musical humor in the context of pandemics, and looks at "The Flu Pandemic Song" by the Flying Fish Sailors, with its focus on the flu pandemic of 1918-1919. How is it that we can cheerily sing along with lyrics like "and they died, died, died"? It's humor, but maybe it's something more.

  10. Teaching win: “can we listen to that again?”

Moreno’s award-winning short, with a stunning score by Mursego. Absolutely bone-chilling

  11. One of my favorite exercises of the semester is a "fan letter" exercise -- folks engage AS A FAN with one of the more significant literature we've been studying. At this point, there are a couple of operas, a cantata, and several modernist instrumental chamber pieces from which to choose. They always have such interesting things to say. I think that "genuine liking" is underserved in standard analytical narratives to which musicology is prone.

    FRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC THREAD #MastodonMusic

    Tonight’s theme: SUMMERTIME

Kpop girl group fromis_9 released "We Go" in May 2021, when the pandemic was raging and so many of us wanted to travel and couldn't.

The music video is all about wanting to do with someone special summer travel - even if we can only do it virtually or in our imagination - and includes this line, for which I calim my bonus points:

Oh oh oh like a midsummer night’s summer vacation
Oh oh oh 한여름 밤의 피서같이

Currently drinking Austin Beer Works FLOATY Hazy Session IPA.
