  1. 🧵 In 1952, Kanafani started to study Arabic Literature at the University of Damascus. Before he could finish his degree he was expelled from university for his political affiliations with the Arab National Movement.

He moved to Kuwait and then to Beirut, working as an editor for various Arab news papers, reading a lot of Russian literature.

At university he had become friends with George Habash, who founded the PFLP in 1967 (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, = Palestinian communist party). Kanafani joined immediately, marking a shift in his life from pan-Arabism towards revolutionary Palestinian struggle.

    >> "That was not a problem for them…"???

    "…UNTIL #Israel came into existence in 1947".

If it were a problem before, you'd have heard it.

There was no independent #Palestine before #BalfourDeclaration.

There wasn’t going to be one even if no #Balfour Declaration.

#TurkishYoke Palestinians would still be under a yoke, but of a different #MENA country. They're "marginalized" because they let others fight #inTheirName. #PanArabism

    >> I think we can both agree that what #India has now is much better than the #British #Raj. The separation of states, good or bad in itself, was managed disastrously, though.

Sure. This gets to the crux of the matter — The difference between an #idea and its #implementation.

Idea of a #TwoStateSolution was better for #India - #Pakistan. It was better for #Israel - #Palestine too — had the latter not recklessly rejected it in 1947 in pursuit of #PanArabism #Arabism.

    >> …#Jews… left #Palestine a thousand years ago. They never ruled it…

    Not "left." Driven out.

    >> #Palestinians never put their land up for sale.

It wasn't "their" land to begin with. They came from #Crete in #Greece.

Palestinians have not "ruled" that land for 500+ years being under the #TurkishYoke since 1517.

    >> This is just another #Crusade but this time control over #oil is involved.

The disputed land is SO RICH in OIL 🙄

    >> And for good reason: it was #Germany that should have given part of its territory, not the #Palestinians, where the #Jews lived in peace before 1948.

No, that wasn't a good reason.

#Arab & #Palestinian calls for #Arabism or #PanArabism in a land that #Jews had occupied since pre-biblical times was emblematic of same #antisemitic behavior rampant in Germany, #Russia, and Eastern #Europe even before #Hitler's #Lebensraum.

    >> idea that you think that still entertaining a 2-state solution while your country continues to heavily arm the Israelis and block any action that would benefit the Palestinians demonstrates just how much you don't understand.

"entertaining" tells me everything I need to know about how much you understand that this solution has been on the table since 1947 when #Palestinians, egged on by forces of #PanArabism, spat on it, and have called for destruction of #Israel ever since.

Nice piece on the military aspects of the 1967 War between #Israel on one side and #Egypt, #Jordan, and #Syria on the other provoked by #Soviet disinfo.

It’s remarkable how long #Russia has been using disinfo to destabilize the world. Listen to it (link above).

It shows how Israel was forced into the war whose primary goal was NOT liberation of #Palestine, but one of destruction of Israel in pursuit of #PanArabism, with Egypt’s #Nasser at the helm.

    >> #Israel to expand war into Lebanon. Israel has only ratcheted up the slaughter in #Gaza. Maybe WW2 never ended or this is WW3, especially when you look at #Russia and #Ukraine

#RussianRevanchism will merge with renewed #PanArabism and #China's eyes on #Taiwan to start #WW3

    >>>> Israel has warned [of] military action to push #Hezbollah northward

    >> And #Biden has signaled that that's totally fine

    >> I don’t understand how the transition away from fossil fuels is taking so long to become an important move to counter #panArabism.

Found someone with a sense of humor!

Great way to make your point without mentioning #Israel, thus avoiding charges of #ShamAntisemitism, or having your windows painted in #Stark #AntiDreyfus symbols.

Yes, there was no independent #Palestine before the #BalfourDeclaration, and there wasn’t going to be one even if there weren’t a #Balfour Declaration.

It would have been a triumph of #PanArabism, with Palestinians still under a yoke, albeit a different one of #MENA countries

    >> They're starting to use the actual Arabic version of the chant instead of the deliberately mistranslated English version

    #Tlaib (D-Palestine) said #FromTheRiverToTheSea is an #aspirational call for #freedom… and peaceful #coexistence

    Let's parse this:

    — "#Palestine will be #Arab" rules out coexistence

    — Her support for #Hamas rules out peace

    — They've repeatedly rejected offers for freedom since they were under #TurkishYoke

    — That leaves #PanArabism ➡️ mastodon.social/@rameshgupta/1

There is so much to read, isn't there?

I would particularly like to read more of and about Mohammed Heikal. The birth, life and death of Panarabism interests me, and I have a feeling that reading Heikal would give me a better understanding of that topic.
