In Ribbons (30th Anniversary Re:Masters)
2023 Worldwide Remastered ReissueA masterpiece of the #shoegaze genre.
I have as much reverence for this as I do Ride’s Nowhere or Slowdive’s Souvlaki.This remaster is phenomenal sounding! Clearer and louder, but not in any off-putting way. It’s very tastefully done, and it sounds the best it’s ever sounded.
The odd time signatures on a few of the songs has always been its most endearing quality for me. The guitars are great (super trippy and psych sounding), but it’s those rhythmic structures that have always stood out most.
“Ordeal” is mind-bendingly heavy and massive, “Throwing Back The Apple” is jangly and pastoral, and “Thread Of Light” features a beautiful vocal Meriel Barham.
Their final, and what I think is their BEST record.

Pale Saints - Slow Buildings
Don't let the hilariously bad cover put you off, nor that fact that Ian Masters left after In Ribbons... Slow Buildings is a better album than its reputation.
Meriel Barham (originally from Lush, way back in their history) had joined a while before, and steps into the spotlight here, adding sweet vocals atop the darker instrumentals.
30th anniversary release, which adds EP tracks and the like.

Perso, à l'époque, j'écoutais déjà #TheLas, #TheStoneRoses, #PaleSaints, #WorldOfTwist, #TheCharlatans ou encore #Ride et #Lush, et j'accrochais pas à Blur, donc le combat Blur/Oasis m'a été totalement inconnu, je trouvais ça ridicule. Néanmoins, contrairement au groupe de Carlos, il y a une chanson de Blur que j'adore et que je peux écouter en boucle :#Blur • I Know (extended version) (Parlophone, 1990)

Vue la météo du jour, c'est parti pour un marathon #IanMasters et #WarrenDefever avec pour commencer #ESPSummer, puis ce sera #SpoonfedHybrid (tout aussi délicat que ESP Summer) et je terminerai par le premier #PaleSaints, dont la réédition des 30 ans est une pure merveille, et enfin les albums de #HisNameIsAlive que j'ai. Ça devrait m'occuper toute la journée.

Je découvre ce matin, à la faveur de l'annonce de la sortie d'un coffret #HisNameIsAlive que le plus que sublime album "Mars is a ten" de E.S.P. Continent (aka #ESPSummer, aka, #WarrenDefever aka His Name Is Alive + #IanMasters aka ex-#PaleSaints) a été réédité en vinyle ! Wow ! L'un des plus beaux disques que j'ai écouté dans ma vie, un mélange de #pop, #rock, et je ne sais quoi, je l'écoute toujours avec émotion tellement il est beau. Un des plus beaux duos de la musique si vous voulez mon avis.

Pale Saints - In Ribbons
Pale Saints was slotted in the "shoegaze" set - probably because it was guitar driven with relatively low-mixed vocals. But it's more Slowdive than My Bloody Valentine.
In Ribbons is when they added Meriel Barham (from early Lush)...and not long before they broke up.
It's been 30 years since this came out, which is a bit hard to believe... new remaster sounds good, well pressed - happy to have a nice copy.

It's never the same, and it's never yet been satisfactory.
In my mind is a song, A Thousand Stars Burst Open by Pale Saints. I hear it as an image, and try to make it.
This year, this is it.
It's not satisfactory, not what I imagine. Not what I hear.
Next year, I'll try again.

Listening to Pale Saints this morning. What an underrated band. Their small but mighty catalogue is stacked with gems. Discovered quite by accident that Sight of You sounds AMEEEZING on 33! (The tru sign of a quality track)
