  4. Young men and #bears were a dangerous combination in the Late #Weichselian western #Alps for which the Late #Palaeolithic Grotte du Bichon from appr. 14,000 years ago was a master example (Morel 1993, Archäologie der Schweiz 16, 110-117. share.google/tkLnhernhStkVr3an ). Now another example from c. 27,000 years Arene Candide is added by new #anthropological analyses:

  5. Reevaluating Hand Stencil Phenomena in Cave Art: A Step Forward towards the Characterization of Symbolic Patterns during the Upper #Palaeolithic in Europe.
Palaeolithic art offers a unique window into understanding prehistoric societies. Thus, the iconography, techniques and stylistic features of the Upper Palaeolithic form the basis of research and are potentially valuable sources of information about cultural and knowledge exchange networks.

  8. 13,000 years ago, Ice Age foragers in Germany used vivid blue azurite—the earliest known in Europe. Not for cave walls, but likely for skin or fabric. A lost palette of the past resurfaces. #Archaeology #Palaeolithic #HumanEvolution @antiquity.ac.uk anthropology.net/p/when-the-ic

  9. Lived here for 30 years but only noticed this stone on the flower bed yesterday. Signs of repeated working? A lithic core?

  10. Neanderthal's high nitrogen values usually lead to them being interpreted as hypercarnivore. But the original study suggests maggots in stored and putrefied meat as cause for the high values:
    science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

  14. The bone, antler and ivory artefacts from the #Magdalenian sites of Gönnersdorf and Andernach-Martinsberg (Germany) are being re-examined by use wear analysis.

This provides new insights into manufacturing techniques, usage, repairs and reuse.

Research into finds made from organic materials has long been somewhat overshadowed by #stonetools , although they provide valuable information about the #behaviour and everyday life of people in the #Palaeolithic.
