I'm teaching a class tomorrow on Arabic / Persian #HTR, and my example manuscript is absolutely amazing. It's a famous 16th-century work on mathematics by al-'Āmilī made in India and has an absolutely insane-looking layout - glosses going diagonally in several directions off the main text - that is nevertheless relatively clear to a human reader, and is not unusual in Arabic books. Will be interesting to see how an AI handles it!

This is a suite of tools for teaching and learning digital #palaeography and #codicology as applied to #western Latin #manuscripts. The website includes 4 multi-use apps, and 4 supporting information packages, as well as a large searchable bibliography. Our code and text is available on GitHub under a CC BY-NC licence.
A few bugs remain but they will be cleared in the next 2 weeks!

This morning I am in Berlin looking at #manuscript Theol lat fol 366, said (with relative certainty) to be written by St Liudger ca 800 CE. Liudger was a missionary from Utrecht who spent years in Britain, then founded the monastery in Werden (Germany) where this manuscript is from. I feel like Liudger is right next to me when I sit in front of his book and read his words, just as he did over 1200 years ago! #palaeography #goosebumps

Last week I was ill and in Paris, my least favourite city, but this was entirely justified by being able to see the Echternach Gospels in person. Made on the island of Lindisfarne around 690, it’s a stunning monument of early insular art and script.

On Sunday I'll be taking my students back to Vercelli and Verona, where (among other things) we will be working with an incredible uncatalogued #medieval #manuscript collection and using digital tools to investigate hidden #fragments inside book bindings. We will also be eating a lot of delicious pasta! Posts about this will be tagged with #SpringSchool25 - stay tuned.
